Wish all to have good start! BACK TO SCHOOL Do your boys adjust well? Mine is ok without resistance. For his chinese dictation today, I had a revision for him last night. He forgot the words 十&四. Kids are kids, long holiday is so great to them.

I am the one have not adjusted well.  I wrongly give him sportswear on 1st day thought it was Monday ( Should be Tuesday) !  And I forgot the dictation on Wed !!!

Take it easy! You will get back to st. jo life quickly. My boy was quite alerted to picking up the right uniform wear. He asked me a few times if he should put on the shirt instead of sport wear on the 1st day of school which he believed it as Monday.

Dear parents of St. Joseph Kinder,
I would like to know if students from St. Joseph Kinder have greater chance to be admitted by St. Joseph Primary.
Does St. Joseph Kinder prefers 'Big Boy'? I raise this question because my younger son is a 'small B' who born in the end of Nov 2004. I was wondering if I should apply for St. Joseph Kinder for him in Sep/Oct 2008 (when he is almost 4 years old). Furthermore, my son only has 15 pts (Catholic and right age student) for primary school lucky draw. I then have to think ahead for his primary schooling.
I would be glad if you could give me some advices. Thanks in advance.

I think you really need to go to the school and read what has been stated on the notice.  I suggest you bring a camera so you don't have to write the details.  

Although my son is studying there, he takes school bus so I seldom go to school and it could be the same situation for other parents.  So we can't tell you any application details of this year.  Also, we are not sure if requirements has been changed when comparing to last year.

That is true that you have to go to school and read the notice in person.  Or if you know any friend working or living in that area. Ask him or her to take a photo of the notice for you.

I don't think the English standard of SJP is anywhere close to international schools.  However, one point I'm sure now is that high standard of performance in English is expected/required by the school.

It is for the first time in my life that I've ever come to notice a P.1 student is required to deliver an English speech in class as part of the oral English examination

I believe all of you are able to help your kid to go through such oral examination.  I just wonder how kids of new immigrants from the Mainland (if any) are able to cope with it

Thanks for your alert!  Deliver a speech??!! You mean they need to write a speech and then deliver it?  What kind of speech?  Teachers will give them topic or not?  Very scared.

They call it oral examination, which consists of 3 parts. Part 1 is for the student to prepare an English speech on specified topic and to deliver it in class.  The topic in this recent examination is "My favourite toy".  Part 2 is to conduct an English conversation with the teacher answering questions, and Part 3 is to read out aloud an English article.

No doubt, it is a good training to kids as it helps them to used to facing the public or strangers after growing up. But the problem for me is that I don't have much time to oversee his progress and check his handbook daily. I have to leave the job to my 'stupid' wife who was so careless that she overlooked the date of his examination

I see.  Then the speech will be prepared by parents, right?  Did your son study in St. Jo. Kinder?  Their K3 English exam also consists of oral part
(->conversation and recite rhymes), apart from dictation and written test on vocab.  

I also gather from my colleague whose son is studying in LaSalle P2 that they have the same kind of oral assessment from P1.  So I think this is the trend nowadays.  The only thing we can do is to help our kids.

Yes, of course, the speech was prepared by me but it is too bad that my stupid wife mistakenly marked the date of examination.  As a result, before I had fully trained up my kid, the examination was already finished

No, my boy was not from St. Joseph's Kinder.

You won't feel suprised for LS adopting the same way of oral examination if you know that those students of LS College (when it was first established) were indeed students of the Kowloon Branch School of St. Jospeh's College.   The two colleges were establised and run by the same body.

I'll fill St. J as 1st choice in both Part A and Part B, but how about other choices? I've no idea how to fill it.

I apologise for having forgotten to tell that there was an additional part (part 4) in the oral examination.  It was for the student to introduce in English about himself and his family.  Seems that I am also a careless father.

Take it easy!  For my son's class, the oral exam was indeed conducted on a couple of days after the date stated in the notice.  My son was reminded to bring his toy for presentation one day before the oral exam.

Though I had prepared the script and practicised with him during the X'mas holidays, he just followed the framework and spoke freely.

He also told me in the oral exam of Mandarin, his teacher asked what his name is.  He replied "我沒有名字".  Her teacher said she would call him "無名氏" in future.  He then answered her his real name.  What a naughty boy he is!

Yes just received the letter yesterday.  No idea ah.  Do you find that there are not many schools in Wanchai District?  Some only have about 30 places    .  I also need to consult other experienced parents about this.
