Re: HK Preschool - Royal Ascot
Hi everyone,
I need your advice regarding local/international stream for K1.
I don't know if it's too early to tell because Pui Pui is only 2 years old but I've noticed that when she plays with my friends' children (all English speaking), she tends to be very sociable and very active..... but then when she's with Cantonese speaking children, she tends to be less active and plays quietly by herself. They all play by themselves at this age but at least alongside each other. Yesterday, the kids play inside and Pui Pui was out at the balcony playing Yan Yu's pushchair.
There was one time when she played ring-a-ring-a-roses with the kids and I said to her, "Go join them" and she said, "Wait Mummy".. because the other kids were playing... and when she was invited to play, she was so happy.
I wonder sometimes if language is a barrier for her... although she speaks more in Chinese now, I wonder if she feels like an outsider. Whereas when she's with my English friends and their children, she's always wanting to do stuff with them.
My british friend let her son go to a local kindergarden and her son was always very quiet and shy. When she swapped him to international, he became very confident and happy and wanted to go to school daily. He's half Chinese and half British so I guess her emphasis on Chinese isn't as great as mine.
Pui Pui will be going to Sydney for her secondary school onwards where she will get zero Chinese. My Chinese friends' children in Sydney of course have absolutely NO chinese....
My question is, should she stay local or go international stream? I really want her to learn Chinese at least until primary level where she can read the papers and order food.... but I hope she doesn't feel "different" to others especially language-wise.
What do you think? |
