Can you share your feelings about IB program? My daughter got offer from Victoria, but my first choi ... What I like IB:
1. Kids are encouraged to question. Inquisitive mind.
Mine started to ask a lot of questions regarding aspects of our daily life. Where does the water go after it passes down the sink? Then how does the water go to the sea? Then how does fresh water come into our flat?
I appreciate the fact that her head is not filled up with A for apple, B for Batman, I for igloo, despite the fact that she knows this as basic knowledge.
I see that my kid is starting to develop precious analytical skills. She would repeatedly and quietly observe things in life , ask herself questions, compare and contrast, and generalize her observations and draw a conclusion. After that, she told me her "conclusion" and continue to ask me questions about the other related matters which she could not yet solve.
2. Smarter kids gets to learn more from teachers because they will ask questions beyond what was taught. Teaching according to the kid's level. Not a one-size fits all solution.
English teacher further divide the class up according to abilities when teaching phonics, so that those who learn faster, won't need to wait for the others to catch up. Ability varies with each child and is quite still wide a gap between super big Babies from the previous year and Sep Babies this year.
3. IB Learners Profile: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Communicators, Balanced, Caring, Risk-takers, Thinkers, Principled, Reflective and Open-minded.
Again, kids are not only taught to absorb information from teachers. They are taught to treat each other and respect each other as an individual. Kids need to be all-rounded ( not in the sense that he is good at academics and good at sports, but in the sense that as a person, he needs to be above). Teachers will not label who is the best in class or whose the bottom of the class because each person has different attributes and is good at different things.
4. Limited Drilling
ABC's are not taught, instead the phonics sounds are. Kids learns the order of strokes in Chinese characters but are not required to write in K1. Surprisingly my kid can copy out Chinese characters with correct order of strokes. I understand that certain skills need practicing, but I don't appreciate drilling pressure from school. I will drill her on my own if it is necessary.
5. No textbooks for Kindergarten; emphasis on developing habit of leisure reading.
No heavy schoolbag everyday filled with textbooks which are covered in class in a rush and the school encourages leisure reading with parents. We get to bring home like 6 to 8 storybooks each month from school library. Kids get the idea that learning happens everyday, everywhere and every minute and not just at school staring at textbooks.
6. Try to be responsible for own learning.
Starting from K1, kids need to manage their own time spent on each activity done during the day so that they have enough time to cover all the activities. They need to be responsible for missing out an activity if they spent too much time doing other work. Kids are working when they try to complete the activities which are not just games to play for fun.
And she is reading a story book aloud next to me while I am typing the above which I can think of now.
The above is what I like and what I think fit for my kid. Again, one solution doesn't fit everyone. So please go by your heart and pick the school that matches your needs.
