I can only speak from my capacity as a Victoria parent. I can't and won't comment on other kinders as I have never sent my kids there.
I like Victoria as it provides an excellent language environment for my kids. My girl is able to, after spending a year there, interact with ease with a native English speker. Of course I would say we also spend much time at home to read with and to nurture her, but I would give credit to the school for her huge improvement in this year. I love and endorse their "learning language without pain" method much. To me, the best way of learning a language is by exposing to that language. Vic provides the environment, which i would say make the school fee all worth it.
As to the comments that it is commercial and "user-friendly", I don't quite know that it means. But from what i have experienced in the past year, at least, the teachers seldom called me to update me of my girl's performance. If they are really "serving" the parents as customers, as many would say, I should be expecting at least a weekly call. I am however ok with this, 'cos I frankly don't need them to serve me. I just want them to teach my kid.
Re miscellaneous charges, they really have none. The monthly school fee is all i am paying. No additional charges for sport days, snacks, art/crafts, x-mas party / performance, out-of-school visits (e.g. they visited the toy library in CWB during school-hours last month with school bus rented, but still no extra charges). I am not too sure what others meant by saying it is commercial, but at least I am pleased that their lump sum school fee is all inclusive. I never recall having to pay anything extra during the entire school-year.
That said, I would still (rather sadly) be moving my girl to another traditional kinder from next term. Frankly, I struggled a lot with this decision. I really love and would definitely miss the excellent language environment in the first place. I would also miss the professional teachers a lot. But reality being, i will more likely than not put my kids to traditional rather than international primary school. I will thus need to the kids to get used to the "traditional" way of learning. In Victoria, the kids are given lots of freedom to choose what they want to do. The school will seldom force them. The kids are encouraged to follow their own wishes. i would say this is something that is very appropriate for a kids of 2 / 3 years old, but sadly, this is not something that could fit into the traditional education mode prevailing in Hong Kong. This, you may say, is the cons of Victoria, i.e. their graduates may struggle getting back to the traditional stream.
The above is my sharing based on experience. Hope it may be a reference for some of you.
Lastly, it may not be the case that all the parents who send their kids to Victoria are aggressive and calculating parents who only target at "branded" schools. Some of us may only have a simple wish that the kids could acquire a more solid language foundation. |
