Hi,
我唔知現在用甚麼書，很難衡量。如你覺得慢，可能30mins太短。一般大約一年學一級。

Totally agreed with Yanni maybe one point to add:

Keep the pulse, and even there are parts you hesitate, rather carry on - try not to stop and start, stop and start

therefore, rather start slow than quick

Sorry to add in.  From the very beginning to Grade 1 is actually a slightly long process, may take 1 year or slightly longer, say, 14 months (of course depends on how the student's motivation is like, and his/ her age).  But if s/he establish a firm ground (s/he has to learn a lot of new things - to learn to read music is actually similiar to learning a new language and requires a lot of coordination - hand/ ear/ eye etc), will become easier.

This stage needs a lot of encouragement though, keep at it!!

Hi Yanni and Chrisding,

Thanks for your comments. My son has learnt 18 months and has finished the following books:
1) Teaching little fingers to play
2) Step by Step Book One & Two
3) A dozen a Day - mini book
4) Everybody - preparatory book
5) John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course -part one
6) More popular piano solos - level 1
7) Theory made easy - book 1 & 2

Now he is learning:
1) A dozen a Day - preparatory book (nearly finish)
2) John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course -part two

My son just starts losing interest as he keeps on learning new songs every week without knowing where he is now.   He also asks me why his friends need to attempt exams and not for him.

Is his progress okay?

progress ok，小朋友愛新鮮，好易失興趣，所以要比些goal佢吔，例如:exam 、competition、recital.....，同老師相量下exam，grade 2 next year，但相信要上45mins。
