Re: ST. Joseph kinder

I attended the P1 parents day on mid Sept. and would like to share the touching presentation of Miss Leung, the principal of SJP, with fellow SJK parents.

I quote what LLT reported at the primary school thread as follows:

[Below are some extracts of what the principal of St. Joseph said during the parents' day held yesterday:-

"eople said we are strict to students. Yes, we are strict. But you will understand the reason when you consider the difficulty and chaos in a class with some 30+ students coming from various kinders, who are accustomed to different learning disciplines. There can be no teaching until their behavior is under control. Despite teachers in the classroom are strict, they all show a smiling face to everyone during the recess period."

"Up to now, we have never given up even one single student. Students' good academic performance is not the primary aim of St. Joseph. Instead, what we pursue is students' good personality. Disregarding his academic performance, we will be able to make your kid a boy with good personality, and you won't regret to have sent him here 6 years later."

"During the past few years parents keep asking me the same question why we do not change into a direct subsidy school. The answer is it is our principle to teach without distinguishing the categories of students. It will be an easy task if teaching should confine to those students striven for by anyone, but then who is to teach those 'unwanted'? We do have more satisfaction when we manage to turn those 'unwanted' into good students."

"Never give pressure to you kid, it won't work; boys' intelligence development usually come late and may suddenly pick up rapidly when they are in their Form 3 or 4." ]

Thanks to LLT for your concise and precise record.

I was deeply impressed by her genuine speech.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi buddiesboyd,

Thanks for your encourgement.

Being nurtured by SJK for two years, my son is well adapted to the SJP life especially on discipline and obedience.

As there is a gap on P1 and K3 level especially on English side, we need to spend more time to upkeep him.  My primary concern is he is lack of initiative to do his homeworks and revision without accompanied by us.

I'm glad that his class teacher, Miss Lee, is very nice and kind whilst the principal, Miss Leung, is terrific and genuine.

Hi Lelu,
No time no see. How grad to see you again? How about your son in the pri life? I think it is also easy to adapt at the first month. As I know but not sure, the books  and plan of P1 are changed. School hope to change more high level than past year. And, I think you are so busy to teach your son and daughter for the new school life. Be hard

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi Lelu,

Thanks for taking time to let us see the speech of principal Miss Leung.

I totally agree with Miss Leung especially the point that boys' development usually come late.  This is also the main reason why I don't like "co-ed" schools.

It is very obvious that my boy become more out-spoken from K2 since in St. Jo. as compared to his K1 time in a 'co-ed' kinder.  At that time, usually it's more mature girls who answer most of the questions and get most of teachers' attention.  Poor boys (not only my boy)

After read your quotation, I more hope my boy can be admitted to St. Jo.      I have confidence in Miss Leung, she knows boys well !!

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

youngmami,

Yes. St. Jo and HKUGA are very different type schools. It is quite hard for me to decide if we get offer from HKUGA.
My boy is a very active kid (at home), I think he is quite different at school. I was quite surprise when he got the best conduct award last year.
It is very difficult to ask my son to finish the homework everyday, and ask him to sit down quietly for 5 mins.
I also like St. Jo to treat the boys more strict, but I think the result are different for different boys. I'm not sure whether it is good to my boy up to now.

My hope is that, HKUGA put my son to waiting list, I can have more time to observe my son's development.

youngmami,

I did just as what Lelu said.
We might not accept the offer.

One of the DSS school I applied is HKUGA, I might consider this one if they accept my son.

Hi Jackielee,

Last nite so happen chatted with one friend who has applied HKUGA for her son and she said HKUGA will announce results quite early so what will you do if they accept your boy    You'll give up St. JO.?  I think HKUGA and St. Jo. are totally different types of schools ah.  It's really a big decision to you   Is HKUGA nearer to your home?
Ha.... your son got the best conduct award?  Very good wow!  I even didn't know there is such an award because my son didn't get it and perhaps he didn't notice that there is such an award.

In that case, why you still worry that your son is not suitable to St. Jo. ?

Anyway, I think HKUGA is also a good school and it has quite new methods to teach kids.  [P.S. I graduated from HKU so should not give negative comments on a school set up by Alumni, right?      ]

Good luck!

Students' conduct is of the utmost importance to St. Joseph.  There is also conduct award in the primary division

Below is extracted from the web-site of St. Joseph's Primary School:

"A Conduct Award Scheme is in operation with special emphasis to give recognition to the very ordinary students for their standard performance in school, who do not break any school regulations though they are not outstanding in academic achievements, or in any other areas. We believe that given opportunity, these ordinary students may contribute equally substantially to society in future as their more outstanding counterparts when they grow up as long as their interest in studies and law-abiding attitudes are sustained in their early years."

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Jackielee,

Since you have such a good boy with conduct award, I believe he will have a very good chance to go back to the primary division during the knock on door stage, if necessary.

I was given to understand druing a public talk last year from a primary school principal that there is still a few % of the seats rest at the discretion of the prinicpal in each school under the present allocation system.

Hi Lelu,

How about the gap in Chinese?  I notice there is a gap already in K2's Chinese.  On the other hand, I don't want teachers to give too much pressure on the kids.

Thanks for sharing with us.

Hello all,

Actually my son is not that good at home, my maid always complains how naughty he is!!

When I accompany him in the "Go" class, he is the only one who can't sit quietly, he's moving around, and is criticized by the teacher.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi sng,

My son learnt limited words or vocabs though he can "understand" and "speak" well with English.

He is weak on "writing" and "reading".  In P1, he needs to bridge the gap of English level.  Besides, he has started to learn grammar e.g. indefinite article, plural of nouns, etc.

Worst still, the English terms of Maths subject often puzzle him e.g. plus, add, minus, subtract, take away, more than, fewer than, equal, difference, altogether, etc.

Despite the gap, he is in good shape to pick up.
Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi EdenDad,

My son does not have any difficulty on Chinese subject as he is inclined to master Chinese.  He is a very curious boy and likes to read memo, notice, signboard and even newspaper.  I am surprised by his vocab base.
Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi Lelu,

Thanks for your reply.  Wow ! Your son like to read memo, notice, signboard and even newspaper !  Amazing and congradulation for he has got such initiative in Chinese learning.

I think help them to discover the interest of the subject could be a good method.  Someone suggest me to play 'making silly sentence', I am trying infact this can be use in both Chin and Eng.  Not sure it'll work or not but my boy does laugh at his only silly sentence sometimes.

It's quite interesting.  Could you elaborate more with examples?  Thanks.  I would like to induce my son to learn more English.
In this realistic world, it is totally irrlevant even if your beloved son is naughty at home, what it matters is he is a very good boy IN THE EYE OF HIS SCHOOL with conduct award.

Accordingly, I can predict with much certainty that your son will be taken back by St. Joseph's Primary School if, unfortunately, you have to rely on the 3rd stage

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

It is derived from FLASH CARD.

You can start with the most simple one like : Subject + verb  e.g. The baby cries/cry.    The trees runs/run.  Start with simple present tense first, so he know there is a different forms in verb.

Start with 5 cards for each, total 10 cards.  Draw them randomly and match.  I add my son's name be one of the subject too.

e.g.  The trees cry.  The baby runs.  You can draw a picture with him for the sentence he likes.

In fact you can modify the system / basic idea to cope with what he has learnt from school (for revision) or what you want him to learn (expanding volcab).

The above example is : short sentence + tense element.
If you want to introduce sentence structure more and can try to make longer sentence.  But may not be good to introduce too many elements at a time.

e.g. Robot is eating an bananna in the moon.
Monster is drawing a potty in the computer.

You can purposely draw the card to make :
(your son's name) is eating a potty in the
moon.    I think he will laugh.

The only cost of this method is the cards or paper, but it takes times to prepare the contend.   The advantage is that it is tailor-made for your own kid.
