It is a funny exercise to find an English name for your kids.  We bought a book for such purpose before Rosaline was born.

I give you the originations & meanings of the two names for your reference:-

Gabriel:-
Hebrewish origination.  The underlying meaning is 'God gives me strengths'.  

The image is lovey, angel face, being considerate, high IQ, and gentlemen like.

Ivan:-
Russian translation of 'John'
The Russian image is short but smart, tough & King like. But 'John' is Hebrewish origination.  Its underlying meaning is 'god is kind'.  The image is kind and religious.

另我都有問我囝囝叫 xx 好唔好聽，佢就話 唔係 xx，係 "apple"，我話您叫 APPLE LEE呀？佢話係呀﹗激死﹗

您貼紙相係邊度影呀？幾多張呀？可能真係每個小朋友都早起身唔想郁就會話唔返學啦﹗但放學時真係不知幾咁happy。

另miss lit 沒有與我通電話?所以唔清楚囝囝返成點??但佢返o左學後就多o左野講啦﹗

For your information purpose, 'Cody' is not meaningless.  Instead it is a 'formal' English name.  Few peoples know because it is a very old English name.  (I know it only from my English name book) It means 'straight and tough', 'endeavour to overcome all kind of difficulties'; the image is 'western cowboy'.  I agree with your husbandthat your kid's English name should carry some meanings.
