The former CUHK President Professor Charles Kao won the nobel prize in 2009 and the next CUHK President Professor Dennis Lo has a decent chance to win the nobel prize in the future.
In fact, according to "Top 2% of the World's Top Scientists" published by Stanford University, China (including HK) just comes after US as second country with most top scientists.
In the recent THE Global University Ranking, China (7) and HK (5) have most Top 100 universities in Asia, much more than established countries like Japan (2), SIngapore (2) and South Korea (2).
Hence, the quality of HK universities and their research quality are not bad from an objective perspective.
