Hi all,
P.1 is the transition period both for parents and small kids to cope with. Though the speed of P.1 teaching is fast, parents wouldn’t feel too panic to handle it. More tense from you, more panic to your kid. It is true that KTS requires students behave well in the class but they will be very free outside the classroom (of course they cannot free to bump others in the playground). I always can see a lot of ‘monkeys’ in the campus everyday.
Personally, I don’t like Kumon. My girl quitted the Kumon Chinese course so early when she was in K3. Too mechanical and repeatedly to do exercises which I do not agree with this way of learning finally. My girl also joined 6-8 activities (including the school and outside) at P.1. But I would choose those activities without homework requirements as I felt that she could handle the homework from school was far enough instead of any extra-homework from outsiders. Without this burden, she always joined and learned eagerly with her outside playgroups. Do not put out the learning fire and energy from their small hearts. Let them learn how to behave well at KTS but also play hard with their activities.
Regarding the book reading campaign, no panic at all as this is a scheme to encourage students to read books. No mark on their school reports. For a bronze medal which only requests them to read 20 or 30 books (I forgot the exact number) in a term (4-5 mths). Though some categorization of books are required, you do not need to stick on it in case that your children really have no interest in one classification. Most of the P.1 students need and enjoy parents to read books for them. If you can read 3 to 5 books for them a week, your children must get the bronze medal eventually. In addition, there is no punishment for those students who cannot read 30 books in a term! Anyway, the school only wants to encourage parents and students to join the scheme so as to read more book which will benefit them a lot in future.
Regarding the articles E-Assignments for Chinese and English, treat them as a game to play as students will be excited to see their ranking on the internet including their classmates.
Regarding the music and sports, in case that your children already learned piano, you do not need to put them another musical instruments if you don’t want. Sports are much more easier than music as every child likes sports activities and the school provides a big variety of activities for them to develop. One sports One music is a major trend in all primary schools in HK not only KTS.
Small kids need our support and shown our enthusiasm to their new school life. Relax ourselves! |
