Thank you. I knew the importance of phonics but phonics do have blind point ... Would IPA more useful in the precise pronounciation of a word and other foreign language though that may only importance in university level.
Xxxxxxx
I am an straightforward person. I think the best way for children to learn listening is to listen more, the best way to learn speaking is to speak more, the best way to learn to read is to read more. That is natural, especially for small children.
IPA introduces a new set of symbols in order to define the precise sound. Ask young children to learn IPA symbols and ask them to check the dictionary and read the IPA symbols to learn pronunciation is unnatural. Correct pronunciation is always required, adult or children. Children can learn correct pronunciations quite easily if you let them listen to the correct pronunciation a few times. Didn't we say children are all very good at mimicking? For those adults who want to improve pronunciation and who cannot learn through listening, IPA is useful. For phonetics researchers or secondary students who are interested in intricacies of phonetics, learning IPA is perfect.
IPA for small children? No thanks.
