Re: 資優兒童Baby

Tina,

Don't use 指教, only sharing. I think 'infancy' is for very young babies.  I will consider 小依言 is no longer baby, she is a toddler.

My son did not sleep well from newborn until one year old, he woke a few times per night. I think it has nothing to do with gifted or not, it was my fault not to train him to sleep thru the night. When he cried, we offered him milk or water to make him fall asleep, we developed a very bad habit.  On his 1 year old birthday, I decided to let him cry in the middle of night. (We don't have a maid, we were very tired after waking up so many times per night x one year)  We let him cried out, after 2 - 3 weeks, he could sleep thru the night.  But, I can tell you, we were very sad when he cried. I still remember, on the first night, he cried for an hour per time.  He woke 3-4 times.

Did you consult with dr. about 小依言 case? I'm not expert so I can't say if 影響腦部發展 but think about it, if we (adults) can't sleep well, we will be very tired in the morning. I think that will be the same for kids. I know you will hire a maid and 小依言 will live with you, try to setup her own bedroom etc... (learn from babycenter.com)  She will be OK.  Don't play too much with her before beddy time.

His sleeping and eating pattern are bothering me very much.  I am reading many books about how to make him eat better and behave better.

Any tips?

critic,

見到Less need for sleep in infancy這個指標.

Baby

WaiMa,

You can order from amazon.com, maybe they don't have stock for everything.

How old is your baby?  If you only want to try one, consider "WEE SING & FINGERPLAY"  That one is very fun.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

I'm very glad that my son can speak longer sentence without my guide or hints.  We watch Animal Planet every evening, he will make his own comment, like:

"Monkey climb up the tree."
"Monkey naughty, Monkey shake the tree."
"Dog jump into the water. Dog swim."
"Busy buzzing bee fly into the sky."

Of course his grammar is not perfect but I'm happy for his development.

He knows the difference between big and small, when he reads the book, he will point and tell me, "Big bus." "Small bus." "Big cup" "Small cup"

When we went out, he pointed at the car and said a complete sentence, "A big yellow bus."  "A small red car." "A big green tram."

Daphne,

I don't know how to type Chinese!!

We have started to speak English since September 2003. When he is at home, he speaks English. But he can speak Chinese to my parents so I think he should be OK in both languages.

Hi critic

My daughter is nearly 3 years old.  She is smart but always cannot control herself.  She is always crazy when she cannot do or get the things she needs.  She is very talkative and noisy at home.  She can only silent when she reads books.  There have no stock at amazon.com.  Do you know any other place I can buy the Wee Sing.  Thank you.

You may try to search wee sing series online from

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Hi Critic & others,

I have been following this since Critic posted it. Reason is my son who is now 29-month old is a "bright boy" as his former teacher put it. He knows a lot of vocabularies, similar to the boy of Critic. The main difference is my boy doesn't talk much. Up till now, he say no more than twenty words. I worry about his speech development but on the other hand I am surprised by his good memory.

When he was about 18 months, while we were reading together, I mentioned "jeep" under the topic of transportation, he pointed at the right word within no time. Out of curiosity, I then said other words like truck, ambulance, police car, etc. He again and again pointed at the right words.

While we were travelling in Europe las Dec, I found out that the helper packed the flash cards of DWE and therefore I played with him. It was the very first time we played those cards and he could pick the right words when we named them. My friends Dutch couldn't believe their eyes - a two year old boy can know so many English words.

My son joined playgroup for right brain development (he stopped for he just starts his nursery this month) and the program director told me that my son's out-performs his peers in all areas and she suspects my boy has the so-called Einstein Syndrom. In short it refers to those kids who are smart but late in talking. I read the whole book about it and do find something in common.

Although I thought of sending my son to have the IQ test, I haven't done so for I doubt the accuracy especially my son doesn't really talk yet.

Critic, are you planning to let your son do the IQ test soon? If yes, where?

As I bought the whole set of DWE, I don't think it got something to do with it. Any DWE users has the samiliar experience? But one remark is I read a lot with my son, mainly English books and he can sit still to read books himself for more than half an hour.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Hi Tszfungma,

I have also been following this topic and I can't help throwing some ideas after reading your message.

If you read a lot w/ your son (lucky boy!) and he can sit still reading a book for more than half an hour, he certainly can recognise a lot of words.  And talking is not the whole picture of how a young child developes.

However, I think you should have a '平常心', whether your son is gifted or not and never mind those IQ tests, which can only indicate a relatively small area of a young child's potentials. They have been notoriouly unreliable in terms of reflecting their other abilities, esp. those creative ones.  Most professional educators (whose books I have been reading) don't think much about IQ test.  In fact, after a child is 'labelled' 'gifted by the test.  Unneccessary anxieties will then follow and not all the parents can handle it in an appropriate way.

There are 3 basic types of intelligence: analytic, creative, and practical.  Most of our education programmes, as well as most IQ tests, are focus on analytic intelligence.  However, as you said, if he can't talk much, I don't think he can do very well in the test.  So why bother?  Save the money to buy more books

If your son is bright, let him be bright without burdening him with the label.  I believe an enriched environment will further foster his potential and we will have one more bright young man in the future.

However, a person with high IQ but poor EQ is a nightmare to everybody and the society.  So just keep up with your good job, (ie being a loving mother   )!

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Dear Tess & Tszfungma,

Thank you for supporting this topic.

Tszfungma:

I'm sure your son is very bright, can he reads the word or by seeing pictures?

As what Tess has suggested, I don't plan to send my son for test. Unless, I am very sure he is gifted.

I bought the Singapore DWE version, I'm quite sure he did not learn too much from watching those VCD.  He is no longer interested in watching them, what about your son? He is more interested in learning from CD rom (Reader Rabbit Toddler, Preschool, DK Toddler for Reading, Maths) I also search a lot of free stuff US educational websites. He loves them and learn quick.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Dear Tess & Critic,

Thanks very much for your sharing.

Yes, I am using "平常心". What I have been doing is to enrich the environment so that he can enjoy learning in a natural way. I am pleased that my boy likes reading. As I am a working mom, I don't really have much time for my son (actually I just completed a part-time Master Degree last Dec). If he can have a reading habit, he can read and explore more and more by himself.

Critic, he can recognize the words. At first we thought he could recognize the pictures but later on we showed him the cards with words only, still he could pick the right cards. I also don't think it has a lot to do with DWE but my boy likes it very much. I bought the Minnie set when he was 6 month old and upgraded it when he was 18 month. He likes it much still and on average he watches DVD once a day. Other than DWE books, he likes reading books of Ladybird and Thomas & Friends.

What really concerns me is that the program director of the playgroup once reminds me that my boy may have problem in class for he knows quite a lot already and therefore he may not find the class interesting or challenging enough. To know more, I have read quite a lot of articles about it. By the way, my boy doesn't sleep so well too. He sleeps fewer hours than the other kids and he very often wakes up several times during the night. It has happened since he was about 1 year old. I talked to the doctor but according to him, if he behaves normally during the day, there is nothing to be worried of.

Tess, your kid is so lovely. It seems that the father is a westerner, is it correct?

Critic, my boy is better in English for we talked only in English with him before. Recently, we use more Chinese for I am afraid that he has problem in nursery (both teachers and classmates). I am using 唐詩 (CD and book) and folk songs of Albert Au (DVD) to teach him Chinese. Some improvement but I don't know if he can recognize the Chinese characters.

Re: 資優兒童Baby

Tszfungma,

I think your son is very smart if he knows so many words by reading them. (Many moms here are using Glenn Doman method to teach their babies to read, but after doing more researches, I know that method does not work. Babies learn from listening, speaking, seeing pictures, knowing ABC following by reading)

I'm a working mom too, what I can do is try to read as much as I can in the evening. He already knows everything by reading 'pictures', I hope he can read soon.
