I heard that the homework load from P.2 onwards will be a lot more.

I think P.1 is still honeymoon.
We need to play a much tougher game from the next academic year onwards.

Is that correct?

My pleasure in doing so and glad to hear that your daughter has started to cultivate initial interest in learning French.

In September, when you will be given the user name and password to get access to the e-class of the school web site, you can find a lot more French-learning games, songs and exercises for your daughter to play with.

唔駛担心喎,呀大囡今日都係得1樣功課,呀細就2樣.最多過次米最多五六樣,(不過係放假前姐 )
不過咁 到咗高小,即P4-P6 d 英文深好多架,同一般d學校真係唔同,出面買d習作都幫唔到.所以都好少買比大囡做,有時真係想買,米為有買singapore 版囉. P6英文作文約180字左右啦,不過d學生多數都作到成二百幾字架,所以平時都要睇多書至得架.

My friend whose son is now in P4 told me that her son needs to learn IPA (phonetics, not phonics).
I was wondering whether higher classes learnt IPA too.

請問IPA(phonetics)係咪國際音標，注音之類嘅嘢呀？呢套依家好似唔係咁popular喎，但唔知對串字有沒有幫助呢？唉！囡囡"Cambridge Starters"嘅Reading & Writing 無咗兩個盾呀，佢話多數考嘅同學都爆盾嘅，所以佢唔係好開心。其實考之前我都知佢串字較差，在短時間內迫佢記太多生字亦無意思。點先可以幫到佢呢？做Journal時差不多個個字都話唔識，真怕她到P.2跟唔上。

Please do not mind the result of just one particular assessment.
As I said recently, kids' performance may not be very stable all the time.
Perhaps your kid was not in very good condition on that particular day.
The important thing is that she has made some progress since the start of the academic year.

Your kid's performance needs to be appreciated/encouraged more.
Please give her some more chance.

Also, you may try to read more English books with your kid.
If she likes to read more English books by herself, it will help her to memorize some more words.
Personally, I will train my kid to cultivate the habit of
looking up new words in dictionary.

多謝您的回覆。囡囡是樂天派，轉眼已無不快。我亦非介意成績，反正讓她參加考試，只是想知道她的英語程度，從而對症下藥。在預備的過程中，看清了囡囡的問題在於串字，所以想找辦法助她改善，以免影響日後的學習進度。

從開學至今，明顯見到囡囡的英語聽講能力有進步，這証明了英語學習環境的成效。至於〝寫〞方面，我亦相信做Journal是一個既有趣又有用的練習方法。但囡囡於上小學前只懂串少許生字和兩、三句簡單句子，確不能一下子要求她作五、六句的短文（Journal），但在這方面我至今仍未能助她過渡。您有沒有好辦法呢？

另外，很同意你提意要多看英文書，因囡囡多愛看中文故事書，中文確有顯注進步。

Just want to share some personal views with you.

1) Knowing phonics will also be another good way to help kid's spelling ability.
When she sees a new word that she does not know, she may still be able to pronounce/spell it sometimes.

2) It seems that I saw some card sames in department stores before.
Perhaps playing some of those simple card games will induce her interest in spelling more English words as well.

3) I think Journal writing (both English and Chinese) is very useful to enhance kids' writing ability.
Personally, I like the Creative Writing a lot.
If you go to the school web site, you can see all the award-winning Creating Writing from P. 1 to P. 6 pupils.
A lot of them are very very creative and interesting.
From just a plain square or a triangle, the pupils can use their imagination to draw all sorts of creative pictures together with their interesting short stories.

You may set some more new topics for your daughter to write, if you want.
The more she writes, the quicker the improvement will be.

4) I think reading both English and Chinese books are very important these days.
Our kids need to be competent in several languages in order to compete effectively in the world nowadays.

If some other parents have other good methods on this, please share with us as well.

各位，

我好奈都無入來呢個 topic啦。

想問下功課問題，有冇人知點解 English journal, 仔仔每次date, 個月份唔可以寫: Apr, 而一定要寫 April? 例如: 23rd Apr, 2006 一定要寫成: 23rd April, 2006?

My guess is that "Apr" is just a short form of "April".
The English teachers may want the pupils to learn the basics first and should know how to spell each month correctly.

Unlike we adults always want to go for short cut or abbreviation.

Just my guess.
