Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi,

I have been told that the total no. of applicants admitted to study K2 in 2006/07 is 80 but the total no. of classes remains the same, i.e. 20 students for a class.  Such arrangement has puzzled me.  I think St. Jo will announce to adopt the DSS policy within one year.  Does any one have any idea as such?

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Dear Lelu,

What makes you think St Jo will become a DSS ?  Just because of the 80 students (less than last year 102) or any other insider's information ?

If this is true, should it be a good news or bad news ?

sng

hi Lelu,

My boy also accepted. And I also heard about the rumor, if it is true, that means we need to pay the school fee but increase our chance to get in P school, so not too bad.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

rossikwan,

My knowledge is limited but hereunder is the info I have.  Other mami, pls correct me if the info is not correct.

DSS - Direct Subsidise School
The school does not join the 'central primary seat allocation system.'  It has its right to choose the students (e.g. by interview, by examination ...etc)
Why reputable school (even King's) wants to change to DSS because they can choose the student with good quality instead of accepted some students who the school may not want through the central seat allocation.  The school has more freedom in having its own policy (admin and eductional side).  For example, some famous DSS is planning to have IB course.

Usually the school charge parent fee, from HKD1200 to HKD5xxx.    I see it as something between private and subsidise school.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

St. Jo Primary is a branded school.  I think a lot of parents would like to send their kids to study there even if it's changed to DSS. If you're from St. Jo Kinder, the chance to get there must be very high after it changed to DSS.  But it seems that no one hears/announces anything about the changes so far. A friend from me who's son is in Primary 2 right now said that she didn't receive any memo from school regarding the DSS changes issue.  I think it's only a wild guess at this moment.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi all,

I understand my view that St. Jo will become a DSS school has shocked all of you.  I would like to clarify that my view is not come from a "source" but my "subjective" analysis below.

SJK traditionally has 4 classes of K2 with total 120 students but in 2006/07, there will be only 80 students.  The annual income of K2 from school fee amounts to about $2.9 million (~$2.4Kx120x10).  The change will cost SJK to lose income of $960K.  Why did SJK do that?

Possible reasons:
a. Too few applicants? Unlikely!
b. Not enough space for 120 students?  Unlikely!
c. Change to small class teaching mode?  Possibly but it is hard to be performed by the existing teachers with traditional approach.
d. Act to cope with the agenda of SJ College and/or SJ Primary? Possibly.

I think (d) is the most possible reason.

It appears that most of the existing top primary/secondary schools  are DSS schools.  S.K.H. schools are the ones moving fast and take advantages to select their students and their respective family.  Because of restriction on selection and the compartive shortage of funding, traditional famous schools are fighting an up-hill battle with the DSS schools.

SJ College is a lucky one as it can select the best ~150 students out of over 300 from the SJP but the pressure on academic results will adversely restrict the all-round development of SJP students.

I "subjectively" think that to the benefit of the students and the development of St. Jo, it will change to a DSS school just a matter of time.

The decrease of intake triggered me to think that it is probably the time.

I hope some parents in SJP or SJ College can clarify my "subjective" view.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi Lelu,

Tks for your detailed analysis.

One point to clarify - last year (intake in 2005, my son's year), altogether only 98 boys for 4 classes (not 120) and several kids left within a few months after Sept. (reason unknown) so in my son's class, now only 23 (among 23, 1 boy newly joined school starting from 2nd semester after Lunar New Year).

Another point - though DSS is a good way out for traditional branded schools but LaSalle Church emphasized that DSS is against their educational policy so schools belonged to LaSalle Church (LaSalle College, St. Jo., ) will NOT turn to be a DSS.

Personally I wish St. Jo can turn to a DSS but it seems that this is unlikely to be happened unless LaSalle Church changed their education policy

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

youngmami,
Thanks for your sharing, totally agreed with all u points. Besides, I guess if the school wanted to change to DSS, they would have taken more kinder students instead of lesser like this year!! This is just my point of view.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Hi youngmami,

Thanks for your clarification.  I am indeed shocked that a K2 class is now about 24 students.  For my son, his class in K2 was 30 and now is 28.  Let me ask his class teacher as I chat with her next time.

The no of students reduces from 120 to 98 and then to 80.  What a mysterious arrangement is?

You are right!

If primary & secondary want to be 結龍, their number of students must be the same.

Re: ST. Joseph kinder

Actually,  any parents have such arrangement for the kid ?  Does it work ?

I know a mother really does this.  The kid studies an internation school at KLN Tong in AM then go to North Point 蘇淅 by 'po mo light bus' for the PM local class.  The kid change uniform and eat sandwich in the po mo light bus.

It is because they are Canadian Citizen (I guess she mean she will send the kid back to Canada for secondary school), and she believe only 蘇淅 can teach really good Mandarin !!!

tks for quoting my words wrote over 1 year ago.  At that time I just puzzled whether to transfer to St. Jo. or not.  I felt my idea is a crazy one after writing it.

Personally I think such arrangement is not good !! I think even adult would feel tired if a.m. go to one school then p.m. go to another school.

Poor little boy - your friend's kid

Give little ones more time to rest, to play freely and to enjoy more lah
