Dear Syria_06,

I prefer her to borrow more books during the library class then after school.  I don't think it is good for her to stay after school, especially she is taking school bus home.

Anyway, very annoying as I don't always understand what she wrote.  Also, worry about she come back with handbook with red reminders from the teacher.

If students want to stay in the library after school, parents need to write a letter to inform Miss Tse to ask for permission.  

Students will then need to come down to the main gate by themselves as we are not allow to go inside the school except the waiting area in front of the gate.  Therefore, parents need to arrange the meeting time & location with their kids.

You can visit the BCA by going thru the links in the school's website.  However, we don't need to do exercise in the BCA as there is no exercise for P.1 & P.2 yet.  You can give it a try.

Can you please offer some advice to me:
1) For item 7 in the Self-learning & Reading Scheme (SL&RS), if the book my girl borrows from class has only 16 pages, should we also mark it down in the Record Form A?  I am not sure how to define story book and fiction.  FYI, the book my girl has this week is "Who's Hiding There?" and there are only 16 pages.
2) For books that our girls bring for Self-study lesson (Mon&Wed), should we also follow the same instructions as in SL&RS?  Regarding the level of the readers, should we give them some that she is capable to read on her own?  Coz I found some of the books she borrowed from class are quite difficult for her to read alone.

Dear 1C moms,

Would like to seek your advice on the below:
1) Did you get Maths & You 1C and Maths & You W/B 1C in late Sept when Ling Kee Book Store sent us a notice?  I did not get them yet.
2) Do you use the Penmanship Paper and the two B-1 notebooks (that were distributed to them in the 2nd week of school) at home for practicing?  Should we reserve them for school homework later?
3) Did your girl give the library card to the library last week after she borrowed the book there?  My girl told me the library assistant got it and she does not have the library card with her now.  Worry if I should call the school for it.

Hi, Lovydear,

1. For those books from class, you should record them in Form A as item 6 or 7.  There is no page request for these books, because the school picked these books for their reading scheme.  FYI, the book you mention is a Fiction.   Most story books are fictions, so when you borrow the books from public library for your girl, just make sure they are over 20 pages.  Doing that, you don't need to think if they are fiction or not.

2. I will suggest you follow that instruction as the books she reads in the self-study lesson can also count into item 6 or 7.  Don't forget to remind her write them down on Form A.

I go to library with my girl every Sat, she will pick 2-3 books she likes to read and I will pick some for her as well.  When I pick the books, I will first check the illustration then the capacity of words.  Lastly the number of pages.  I used to pick those with nice or cute illustration so that she will enjoy reading the books.  For the capacity, I think around 5 - 10 short sentences per page should be her standard.  When I pick the books, I don't really read thru them to check if she knows every single word in the books as long as I search from the JJ or J sections as those books are for them.  I will only scan a bit of the pages.  

You should base on your girl's standard to pick the book for her.  A few new words in the book doesn't matter to them.  Actualy, it will be better as she will learn new words.  Eventually, she will read the books by herself and may ask you a few words when she encounter them.  When she comes to you a lot asking about words, then it will be a good time to teach her how to use a dictionary.  

That's how I work with my girl and she is reading now all by herself, though I know that she doesn't come to me or Miss. Dictionary when she does not know some of the words.  However, as long as she understands what is the contents, I think that's OK.  Most important of all to me is : she love reading.

BTW, the books in the class are a bit difficult to them, so we should read with them.  Those are compulsory, we have no choice on these books. Therefore, when you choose for her, you can pick something more interesting to her.   

Remember that : when you pick the books, always keep in mind that she is the one who read the books.  Then, you can pick the right ones for her.  As you know what she likes to read and how is her standard.  Don't worry.  After a few times, you will know how to help her building her reading habbit.

1) yes, we received Book 1C and Workbook 1C already.  can't remember which day but a few days after we received the notice from Ling Kee
2) not sure when to use them, so just leave them on the bookshelves for the moment!
3) no worries.  they keep the library card.

Thanks for the reply from AmyWonglo and 琴棋書 about the use of school library after school.

Now, I realize that the library operation does have some complication for P1 students to use it after school.  

Perhaps, that why the school introduces alternative ways such as class library, reading time in self-study class as well as morning reading in the auditorium.

My girl always goes to library after lunch.  

You can tell your girl to go there instead of playing in the playground after lunch.  If she goes right after lunch, she will have about 20 mins in the library to search for books. (The library is in the new wing, so it takes a few mins. to walk there from their classroom.)
