for those who are still "alive", you can try to look at the recordings of Shaham, Mutter, Bell, Hilary Hahn, Sarah Chang (who is going to have a concert in HK this year... but the programme might not be suitable for you though) etc.

Hi,

The Hong Kong Records outlet at Festival Walk carries a very good classical collection, which is much better than HMV's.  Don't miss the Naxos Historical series (excellent buy for $49 each).

For DVDs, I recommend "The Art of Violin: The Devil's Instrument - Transcending the Violin" and "Oistrakh, Menuhin & Rostropovich Play Bach, Brahms & Mozart".  Both can be found at either HMV or Hong Kong Records.

"The Art of Violin: The Devil's Instrument - Transcending the Violin" and "Oistrakh, Menuhin & Rostropovich Play Bach, Brahms & Mozart" are good. There are one set of EMI DVD about most master of violin, but, if you get the set in HMV, will be far too expensive. In those MongKok Shop would be cheaper.

Shaham, Mutter, & Hilary Hahn are good.
But for Sarah Chang, I think Midore is much better, and much worth for the ticket!!

Heifetz is really nice. His DVD show all his talents!

But for 李傳韻, I shouldn't comment. He is in an "extreme-Heifetz-style"... Ha~

Get the book of Auer, talking on violin playing. A very good book for all grades learner.

I am a big fan of Heifetz, and I love Bach.  And that gives me a problem - I HATE Heifetz's Bach.

李傳韻 is indeed very good.  Get a copy of his Paganini's 24 caprices.  It is rated among the best.  I once heard him in a mini concert at HKU.  There were 5 (yes, I said FIVE) Strad and one de Gesu for him to play (brought to HK on a tour by Bein and Fushi).  It was quite an experience to hear and watch him play the real Strad and de Gesu some 10 feet away.  Just wonderful.  BTW, Viviane Hagner is giving a free mini concert tomorrow morning at 11 at HKU.  Don't miss it.  Chance is that she will play on the 1717 Stradivarius 'Sasserno' violin.

Concert goers will be very busy in May and June: Papavrami on coming Sunday; Sarah Chang on 28/5; Truls Mork on 10/6 and Midori on 22/6.

I have read Auer's "Violin Playing as I Teach it".  I don't like it that much and tend to think it is a book for teachers.  For learners, I would recommend the two books by Robert Gerle - "Art of Practicing the Violin", and "The Art of Bowing Practice".  Simon Fischer's "Basics: 300 exercises and practice routines for the violin" is also very good (some may find it too boring though).
