How well - prepared is more important than how old is more suitable to go overseas. IMO, the earlier the better given that both parents and kid are well-prepared.
Right from the beginning of primary school, I told my son that he has to prepare for studying overseas anytime after primary school. Instead of conveying the message as an order, I told him how good it would be for studying overseas, and how lucky he was having such opportunity. Then sending him to local overnight summer camp in primary 3 to 4 so that he started learning to stay away from home. He then attended overseas summer camp every year since primary 5 in UK and USA by himself as UM until he went to the States in 14.
I understand that most parents will think that having parents with youngsters in their adolescent period is important in developing their character and values. Honestly speaking, not all parents can act as good role model and not all parents can guide their kids better than those well-established boarding schools.
Why are so many affluent families and celebrities, including kids of CEO of MNCs, sending their kids to boarding schools at very young age? Wouldn't they unable to teach and guide their off spring? I believe that there must have good reasons for the choice.
