I have some comments on the interpretation of IB results:-
(1) Most of the subjects in IB have Higher Level (HL) and Standard level (SL). There are big differences between HL and SL in terms of breadth and depth. The content in HL subjects requires 240 teaching hours versus 150 hours for SL. Even two students get the same IB score, their levels of achievement are different depending on how many SL/HL subjects they took. Universities know the differences. In fact, the UCAS tariff gives 130 points to a Level 7 @HL and only 86 points @SL. Some schools only offer subjects at SL, especially English & Chinese.

(2) the average score of a school is not very meaningful because it may be affected by a few good/bad performers. For example, a bad performer with a score of 20 may pull down the average score of a school significantly.
(3) the 40+% is more meaningful because it indicates the likelihood of a student getting a good IB score if he/she works hard.
