True. In fact, my kid learned both methods. Frankly, I think you may skip phonics as it's not difficult to handle. We did not learn phonics in my old days, but it's not difficult at all to spell the words: teacher asked us to play the words game, we can easily spell all the words, of course, may not be 100% correct to spell those words ending 'sion', 'tion' etc, but at least we knew the skills at that time
Re phonetics, it's so easy to tell when you do the presentation if you can pronouce the words correctly or not. It's greatly affect the impression of the people who are listening to your talk if you are super in English or not. Even you say one word incorrectly, it greatly have a great impact.
