If it really is the case and if I were you, I'd make a formal complaint to the Customer Service section (or whatever they call that section) of the Health Department. I'm quite certain that you WILL get a earlier appointment as these people are usually 欺善怕惡:evil:

My son is now 3 years 4 months old and the diagnosis by STEP showed that he is suffered from PDDNOS.  He was used to communicate in English and now we want to switch him to Chinese.   What is the best mechansim/procedure to do so?

Now my second son is 3 months old.  What is the chance he suffered from Developmental Problems?   We have no family history of its kind.

Dear all,
I learnt from mums here that gov't assessment centres wil offer assessment for kids before they enter P.1. So early last week I called the gov't assessment centre in Fanling to see if they would anrrange any assessment/ services for my son.

The assessment centre replied me that my son's file had been closed because the previous dignosis on my son in July 2003 was "suspected autism spectrum disorder" and they had already referred my son to the Early training Centre.

In fact, the assessment done in 2003 was incomplete. But the doctor suggested they would arrange another assessment for my son when he grew older. So I just don't know why the Centre closed my son's file.

I then tried to explain to them about my son's current situation and asked if they could "reopen" my son's file. The nurse said they would discuss with the doctors and properly my son's file will be forwarded to Shatin centre for follow-up. And we would have to wait for serveral months.

To the best of my knowledge, the government child assessment centre will re-assess our children upon primary one application (government or aided schools only) if the parents have specified the need for special education in the P.1 application form.  The child's file will be forwarded to child assessment centre again.  The purpose of this assessment is to find out whether the child fits normal school or not.  [size=medium]If parents do not specify the need for special education in the application form, the government will not offer any assessment for their children.

If I were you, I won't reveal the truth just to eliminate the labelling effect.  I will wait until the school teacher calls me up for the interview.  When the school finds that our children have problem, it must ring us up.  If they don't call us, there may be three possibilities: (1) the teacher is too busy, (2) the school does not care for our children or (3) our children have no problem  :.  Actually, you may trace some clues from your child whether he is happy at school or not.

Yes.
However, many mums tell me that government assessment centre will assess the child in great hurry and they just give a brief I.Q. report to the parents.  If you want to have a detailed I.Q. report to find out the strengths and weaknesses of your child, you may look for an educational psychologist to take the I.Q. test.

Dear stellacl,
Your son is so smart.  If the same situation applies to my son, he may either day dream or play with the others; is his behaviour very extreme?  For the first few times that he attended the Sunday school, he just sat quietly.  However, once he knows the environment well, he will take advantage of the loophole.  He is very naughty.  I think that he may not pass the interview of private primary schools. Aided school may not be bad for him, all depends on the attitude of the school.

1. Professor Sir Michael Rutter, THE world authority in autism, heavily criticized the term PDDNOS when it came out (in DSM-IV), together with other distinguished persons, including Simon Baron-Cohen, the original researcher of the "theory of mind" studies.

Some people call PDDNOS the "garbage bin" diagnosis (i.e. when all other diagnosis does not fit). The label means nothing to parents, and even to me as a professional as it could be anything...

2. In normal situation, it should be easier for the kid to adjust to a Chinese (Cantonese) environment than an artificial English one created by you. Just keep talking to him and get his response whenever possible and he should progress well.

3. Despite the fact that there're studies proving that autism is of biological origin but in my experience siblings with autism are relatively rare. Don't worry too much.

Dear Dr. T,

My daughter is 2yr10mths now. Last month I brought her to do an initial assessment by a private doctor, who is a specialist in child development. According to the doctor, my daughter's social skill and emotional control are weak. Although her speech development is much better than her brother, we still need to keep an eye on our daughter's development, as her brother is autism.

There is no any autism/ PDD case in our families' history.

my elder son is Asperger, my younger son is 2 yrs and 2 mths but still can only say single words, sometimes 2 words......but can never say anything in a sentence. My pediatrician said his speech is behind but still within normal range. I am worried sick that he also got A-features. He has been attending playgroup twice a week but I have decided to send him to full day nursery next month, do you think it will help?

Totally agree to your opinion.  My child used to speak English before 3 years and 10 months old.  His speech was simple and short (maybe the English environment is not 'natural' enough).  He started to learn in Chinese afterwards and has made progressive improvement.  If my child was trained in Chinese at the very beginning, his might perform much better.

Close monitoring of anything is often better than ignorance. Just don't be too over alert about what you observe.

Providing kids with sufficient social stimulation and allowing them to interact with age peers are the essential ingredients of healthy development, no matter the child is "A", or not.
