We are slightly lucky in filling this gap since the school teaches in PTH and pinyin are taught in K3.  The elder one reads Chinese in PTH and there are some decent books with Pinyin before reading bridging books.  Now that we are on bridging books, I am struggling whether to teach the elder one zhuyin symbols.  For the younger one, I think I will likely just teach zhuyin symbols once there is a good grasp of pinyin.  I have yet to try it but I think this is one way to keep the Chinese and English reading level closer so that one would not lose interest in Chinese as easily.

Is he willing to discuss the books with you?  I find that just through discussions, I can get a pretty good idea of how much they understood the book.

for Chinese books, I ask him to write 段落大意for English stories, he can write me a new ending or any topics he likes
for fact books, I let him do a small oral presentation to "help me learn something"

I prefer him to write because it saves me some time and he can practise making fewer careless grammatical mistakes.

Amazing!  How did you motivate your kid to do the first presentation (for checking how much your kid has comprehended)?  My boy is rather shy, but definitely he's a fast reader (he started reading Roald Dahl's series in K3). He's now a P.2 kid, but sometimes I do worry he reads too quickly while missing the important messages.  For example, last night he finished a Magic School Bus chapter book within minutes and then rushed to look up the word "skit" in the dictionary as his mum requests him to learn one word each day.

He's not much into doing presentations and show-and-tell that kind of stuff and I've no clue in boosting his interest in doing so.

Any tips to share?

Better selection of books since Chinese is taught in traditional characters and PTH.  I have only been able to find books from HK with both but there aren't that many good ones.  Zhuyin offer access to Taiwan books!

We talked our boy into thinking that we are helping him when we give him extra work. It's difficult if he thinks we are forcing him to work extra; it's easy when he thinks we are helping him because we love him.

And actually my boy is in P4 now, he's more mature and will think about his future. My girl is in P1, we are letting enjoy her books with nothing extra to do. Sorry if I have caused some confusion here.

Wind up reading 5 different Chinese bridging books tonight for comparison's sake.  Brief thoughts as follows:

故事摩天輪:  easiest in terms of difficulty, good story with additional layers of meanings.  Reminds me of decent, but not as good as great, picture books that you can read and re-read and get at different parts of the story

維京故事館:  slightly more difficult but because it is longer, has slightly better story.  decent writing as well

閱讀123 (屁屁超人):  most difficult of the three and quite a bit more than the other two.  crap story but can be useful to get children interested in reading.  not sure you can make much meanings out of the stories though.  i don't like the writing much either since it is quite 口語化

http://www.chinalane.org/listing/storytree.html
一二隻辣椒,都有聲畫配音。

4 默字既話,去http://www.dragonwise.hku.hk/dragon2/schools/archives/morph.php
多做遊戲或看字形由來。

Thank you!   中華里 is great!  Do you have any Chinese books to recommend as well especially at the bridging books or early chapter books level?

我都覺得好難搵有趣既中文書, 繪本又太簡單...但翻譯書(愛麗斯夢遊仙境等)又太深, 阿仔唔明又冇心機睇...

HKTHK:

http://www.kingstone.com.tw/book/book_page.asp?kmcode=2029474702034&lid=search&actid=wise

世一出咗好多本呢個系列既漫畫,我自己係響一百蚊八本既折價書展買到呢個系列既幾本漫畫,之後搵唔返,但係發覺阿囡都鍾意睇(佢唔鍾意睇武俠,估唔到會睇偵探),就買咗以下套字書:

http://www.kingstone.com.tw/book/book_page.asp?kmcode=2018760132433&lid=search&actid=wise

這應是少年版吧?字不多。過年前在教協發現好讀出版社出了成人版系列,都打算訂,不過剛碰上教協過年後停業一個月,沒行動。後來發現金石堂這個網,有頗多囡囡遍尋不獲既冷門書續集,就先訂了那些。

您試試在那網站找找有些什麼男孩會感興趣的書吧?書價其實不是平香港賣的很多,但種類會多。

Thank you!  We actually read quite a number of 繪本 and I do like them a lot since it is easy to have a good conversation afterwards.  We actually have not done much comics.  With bridging books and 繪本, I think we have enough for the next few months but I am thinking more about later.  English books has very good selection all the way from learning the alphabets all the way to literature.  I can't seem to find good Chinese books after the more advanced 繪本 but I am not sure if it is because they don't exist or I am just not aware of them.  Do you have any recommendations for girls as well?

我個仔只睇中文漫畫喜羊羊、兒童三國系列。

後者對d四字成語好有幫助。
