For professional programs, IB students are equally capable to handle them, but depend on the following considerations:
1. Subject choices and Levels;
2. JUPAS has more spaces vs non-JUPAS; and
3. Strong competition vs graduates.

I am not saying IB students cannot cope with professional programs.  What I am saying is, most professional programs may not "need" the soft skills offered by IB as the child knows he/she is going to be a doctor for example.  In these cases, may be it is wise to just go for DSE or GCE AL to go "deeper" in "fewer" subjects.

Different parents may have different views, my son aim for professional programs via IB stream. He may benefit more from IB curriculum even work much harder, easier to survive in further studies and career development.

I mustn't forget your son is gifted and likes to take on challenges.  That is very good of him.  You are clearly being too modest. You should not talk about survival, you should talk about height. How high can he fly?
When will my girl stop fooling around and start real studying?

从来不是很会计数的人, 读书更无谓老是想有否着数. 有人22岁已读完Phd, 有人32岁一边打工一边读, 有人退休又读番书, 总之是想读又读得就继续吧. 自己搅份学费就得!

写完呢两句负气话, : 简直是世界未日, 遗害人间!!!!  已经成晚箩箩峦! 可能今天比你丙到七彩.  

小女要读物东东我都未知, 或者IB, 又或A level 吧!  话之佢物野考试, 要考得很好, 难度不少, 一百个普通人做菜, 挑出两碟最好味的, 要好过其余98碟, 总不是靠符碌吧!  

这边的爸爸不少精于计策, 懂得走位分析研究, 我一D吸收力都没有, 听左都唔多记得, 更唔明多10分的分别,呢度跌左10分, 咪系第二处补番, 补唔番阿妈都帮唔到的,  只会提醒孩子脚踏实地读书, 心口挂个'勇'字, 记住永远做喜欢做之事.

这边的孩子, 印象最深的是令郎, 竟然情愿意忍受焅热, 不欲浪费资源的,(还是公家的), 能为别人想的孩子, 往往比只懂为自己想的孩子更有前途的!  (laoweanjian 又话有人道德高岸了).

How to distinguish soft skills and transferable skills?

These terms are concepts with fuzzy definitions. I would say:

Soft skills covers any knowledge/skills are NOT specialist knowledge. There is only degree of goodness with non definite right or wrong. Finer points of language skills, presentation skills, negotiation skills, etc.

Transferable skills are skills that remain useful when you move from job to job. It covers both soft and hard knowledge.

Thanks for your definitions and I agree with that.
Discussed with my son, he thought those skills he acquired in IB are more transferable, instead of soft skills.

Annie40嘅女未讀大學未考慮呢啲實際問題。一方面讀少一年慳幾十萬，一方面GPA唔夠高又驚揾唔到好嘅graduate school，確係頭痕。我阿女學校中級經濟有兩班，一班幾百人，普通班；一班幾十人，calculus based嘅。我唔知頭唔知路，問阿女點解唔揀數底嗰班，但阿女話嗰班係俾準備讀Econ PhD嘅人讀嘅。佢學校已經出名爛grades，撞入埋呢班，想畢業後讀JD就難啦。

我嘅經驗係間間大學都有啲容易攞A嘅科目，咁樣就唔駛repeat讀過嘅嘢，可以學啲新嘢，又唔驚影響GPA。阿女就揀音樂、語言。上college confidential 或類似網站就揾到料，美國呢啲嘢透明度高到你唔信。阿女學校官網提供埋links去呢啲網俾你睇番每科以前成績分佈，學生俾每個教授嘅評分/評語(好似rate my professors個站咁)。

有朋友嗰女中大讀，未讀過日文走去揀日文初級班，入咗去先發覺差唔多個個都讀過日文。

在英國制，所有top economic schools 都要學生科數好掂先至收 undergraduates. 面試時一半時間計數，要求比美國高好多。

My wife got her economics degree in the UK and she said, in general, economics programs are much more mathematical in the US than in the UK. More and more UK programs are just copying from the US programs. The top economics programs in the UK include those at Oxbridge and LSE and I just checked LSE's website. They are using the same textbook my daughter was using last semester (the lousy book was written by one of her professors). She was taking the less mathematical class but the book is named "Microecomics: Theory and Applications with Calculus". When I looked at her exam papers, they were full of calculus symbols.

Current years, all top Economics schools are more mathematic oriented, not the same as decades ago. It's favour my son

我也祝大家聖誕快樂！順便介紹阿女舊年exchange去嘅當今韓國學壇人氣組合SKY嘅成員Yonsei 延世嘅校園聖誕夜景，如幻似仙，阿女話日頭睇都好靚。話每次走入校園內的樹林，都有走入童話嘅感覺。韓國學生想入SKY是但一間都難到死，外國人易好多兼有豐厚獎學金送。香港學生升學，唔駛一定係英美澳加咁悶。
