Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Hi, ethaniel,

Thank for your sharing.  I share with your views on SHK.  Same as your son, my daughter really loved the playground in SHK and enjoyed playing there on the interview day.

My daughter had interview in Sacred Heart last week.  IAfter entering into the campus, she felt a bit lost and cried.  Amongst the 4 interviews she attended, it was the first time she cried and we felt strange. My hushand said may be she really did not like the school !!

My hushand considered the teaching style and school environment of SHK suit my daughter most (SH is a bit strict and harsh but has connection with primary school and it is the point that many parents applied for the kinder).  Also, there are only two classes (K1) in each session in SHK (SH has 4 classes), I think the headmaster and teachers can play close attention to the students.  On the registration day, I had the chance to chat with the headmaster and found her very nice and sincere.  I also interviewed some parents on that day, all of them said their children enjoyed studying in SHK and recommended that SHK was very good.  I also found the SHK students are happy and polite. My husband said he would prefer SHK to SH and thought our daughter would enjoy studying there and hope to pave the way for my younger son to go to SHK two years later.

May be my daughter is the classmate of your son in the coming Sept.  Glad to share and chat with you.

Hi Sindy,

Thank you for your advice.  May I know the English and Mandarian standard of SH.  Do they teach phonics and how many Eng and Mandarian lessons every week (start from K1)?  Will all the K3 graduates can directly admitted to primary school (private section)?

Dear Cyrus,

聖保羅堂 doesn't care about 細仔 or else because my daughter got a place there and she was born in 2002年-11月.

In my experience, the teachers there are all very nice.  Always wear friendly smile on the face, they give me a very comfortable feeling in the interview.

Re: hello Ethaniel and yslysl

Dear Ethaniel,

Sorry for the late response as I’ve been busy with the new house – renovation, packing, moving and etc. Finally, we moved to HK Island the week before CNY. Except for Travis’ stuff, all things are still a mess … Anyway, although a bit late for Chinese New Year greetings, I wish you and your family the best of health and wealth.

Co-incidentally, today is Travis’ first day of school after 3-m suspension (due to his health condition). We end up sending him to Woodland Happy Valley as the Caine Rd one can only offer us a seat for the pm session.

As always, I appreciate very much your insight and constructive comments.

Perhaps it is the upbringings of both my husband and mine that lead us to put a lot of emphasis on Travis’ English development.  We feel that English (and Mandarin) is one of the critical skills for successful career development (at least for the fields which we are working in) in HK among other things.  Since we’ve no plan to leave HK in the medium term, Travis will naturally pick up Cantonese which is all around him day-in day-out. For English, we have to set him up by paying extra and hopefully by getting him start early, he will be competent and comfortable to maintain it even when he is switched back to a more Cantonese environment.

I’ve two nieces, they both studied in St Paul Co-ed primary school (P1 & P2 respectively). No doubt, they are lovely, brilliant and presentable kids. Not pretty face type but looks and acts very smart. One can easily tell from their face expression, their speech that their little brain must move very fast. However, when it comes to spoken English, their voice turn so weak and they behave like a little chick.  Recently, fried of mine who teaches Chinese pre-school kids in Auckland’s China town told me that as kids at pre-school age develop their language skills, they can easily pick up 2 languages at the same time. Indeed, this is quite right for Travis, he can understand both English and Cantonese quite well though he primarily speaks in English.

My husband and I have sound educational background and we feel that we collectively can tutor/support Travis in many areas except English and music. That’s probably explains why I am replying on international pre-nursery school on the English aspects.  Of course, I know that there is a high chance that he will lose it all once he starts K1 at SKH. But it’s OK even if it turns out so as it is only a matter of money.

Enough enough for my opinions. Time to get on sthing more fun.  How is your holiday? Ours, although tired, are wonderful – spent quality time with family members of both sides. In addition, took Travis to the Botanical Parks twice.

Cheers,
Travis Mommy
