I am moving to Shanghai, I want to bring as many English books as I can.

Just for your information. I think if you move to Shanghai, you can buy really cheap readers over there.

During Easter holidays, I went to Beijing for holidays. I paid a visit to the 北京圖書大廈 and the 'Foreign Language Bookshop' (?). They have some readers which are originally pubilshed in US/UK but reprinted in China. The books are very cheap e.g.   A set of readers (Level 3 with  6 books) published by Harcourt Education Ltd. (UK) is only charged $15. There are also books from DK, Longman........ which are reprinted/published in China are very cheap.

How's the quality of the books? I heard from other moms that the paper quality is not that good.  I also want to know if the books are in English or English +Chinese?  For English readers, I prefer only in English.

My friend bought me two children books in Beijing about two years ago when my daughter was around 1-1/2 yrs old.   The paper quality was really not good (rough paper) and with some smell in the paper when I get closer to the books.   The books have both English and Simplifed Chinese.

I'd be very pleased to know the books quality nowadays as I understand a no. of moms bought books in Guangzhou, Shenzhen.  In fact, I have a friend who is going for a few days trip in Beijing in end May, I look forward to your advice before I seek for his help to buy some books there.

My sister buys books from Shenzhen very often, the quality is very bad.  I also asked a friend bought me a few piano books from Guangzhou, quality is a bit better than Shenzhen, the paper is very rough and thin.  I'm keen to know if the one in Beijing is the same?

I agreed with you.  I highly recommended the series called "小海龜叢書",分為5個系列,即是: 1. 神秘探險 2. 紫激光束 3. 紅激光束 4. 綠激光束 5. 尋寶少年.作者有Lisa Thompson, Christopher Stitt等,內容類似Magic Tree House series.印刷也相似,又似Collins出版for semi- or confident young readers的書.很超值.中國電力出版社.除紫激光束我只買到一本外,其他我都買齊.書價由5.9至8元(可能紫激光束賣8 元,因為唯一擁有的一本紫激賣8元,其他的全是5.9元).適合小四至初中.而且,我大仔非常喜歡看,說many,many adventures.

我相信這lot書,一定會有許多好書.因為外國兒童書籍非常多品種及吸引.只是舊的classic書不值錢,re-sell都不大吸引外國人買,但很奇怪,他們子女生日或as Christmas gift又很喜歡買classic的書送給子女,特別是年幼的子女.

我不知道.Beijing stands for what?我知道大陸有很多出版社,所印之書行銷全國,除非斷版,不然全國書店都會有售.但發覺每一次逛大陸書店,都會發覺有很多新書出版,特別是兒童書籍.且印刷很精美,價格便宜,如果你不介意簡體字,選擇可謂琳瑯滿目.買好書又何必拘泥於Beijing呢!

I knew that there is a very big "book City" and a street that have many book stores including foreign language book stores.  I didn't have much time to visit these shops last Easter holiday when I was there.

If your husband will be in there next month, may be you can ask him to have a look at these stores so that you can have some idea on what should buy.

For you information, I've gone there to have a visit to some of the shops seeling the kid's things that I may need to buy (such as toys and clothing).  To conclude, the price is much expensive than in Hong Kong (for the good quality things), no matter they are imported or local made.   My friend told me that if I want to maintain the some living standard as I am in Hong Kong.  I need to spend more in Shanghai.

If any BK member is very familiar with Shanghai environment, please let me know where to buy good BB things but with reasonable prices.

Just had lunch with a friend, she works & lives a few years in Shanghai. She said, most local parents (hi income) are willing to spend money on toys & books etc... so children stuff are expensive there.

I believe, there's still shops to entertain low income families (like me!) My husband is leaving on Sunday, I hope he will have time to look around and give me some feedback. At least, we have to stock the milk powder.

Agreed with jjmama, those re-printed books (esp those from DK) are very good - in term of price and quality.  

You guys may try the 上海书城 in 福建路 and another one in 淮海路。  I swear every book worm will be more than glad there.

I have been to the "shanghai book city" last year, it seem that both the variety and the number of english children book is much less compare with HK.

Also, I think you better drink distill water ,of course those from famous brand,not the boiled tap water when you moved to SH. The taste of the boiled tap water is bad.

Everything is expensive there if you want good quality goods .

For kids clothing, there is an outlet some where near city center. It is cheap and of good quality. I can ask my hubby for exact location if you would like to know.

For those books that I brought, yes, the quality of the paper is ok la (a bit thin).........But the price is only $2.5 for a new English reader     what can we expect?? Certainly the quality of those readers e.g. Oxford Reading Tree is much better.....but the $$$$ is much more expenisve.

But for me, it's fine.....since I will anyway read with my sons and those readers are not for toddlers....My sons are old enough and they will not tear the books!!   

Those English readers that I brought are only in English, not bilingual.

Actually, if u have time, u can find very good quality books in China with very low $$. Last time, I brought a Chinese book about cars........which costs me $5 (I brought it from local 圖書批發市場 but charged $6.9 in bookshops) and the quality of the book is excellent with 膠質面 and the pictures are very 立體......    my sons love to touch and 'feel' the cars.

I also agree that if u want to buy good quality goods in China.....very expensive!!

Your friend may go to 北京圖書大廈 (西單MTR station) to have a look.......I think the second floor is for children books and the third floor is for English readers......last time, I just spent an hour there so it was a bit rush la!!

I just mentioned the car book which is worth to buy (in simplified Chinese)....it's a series <<小小孩大開眼界>> --- 汽車 & 9 other topics ($6.9 for a book).....by 吉林美術出版社. The printing quality is excellent .......I wish I can buy the whole series....I only brought one!!

For the Foreign Language Bookshop in 王府井......it sells many foreign readers and the price is more or less as in Hong Kong (e.g. above $25) ........but I think it offers more choices than in HK.

I've just discovered this topic.. would like to know if you could tell the general condition of the used books. In fact, if the books can be  70 to 80% new, it's already an excellent offer for this quoted price ($1015 for 100 books)!
