All depends on what you want. My P1 boy has gone to private tutoring ever since kindergarten. He is in the same English class with 2 DBSPD boys and a co-ed girl. He is reading same paper back novels as his DBSPD peers. I even get the list of DBSPD recommended reading books for him, and he reads them without much problem.
There are different things to learn for different books. A book that looks easy and with lots of pictures may have very complicated sentence structure. Even though his daily reading assignment my look a bit easy, there is always something to learn from, from the writer's choice of word to simply even enjoying the funny story. Afterall, no one will read if he can't find the fun and joy of it. Kau Yan has so many variety of books fitting different individual needs. Even in DBSPD, St. Paul Co ed, student's English level varies, but of course with an average higher standard.
In Kau Yan, my boy is very happy, and has built up very good self confidence. The teachers are really loving and caring. He is also establishing a very very good reading habit. He really enjoys the reading, and never asks for TV since he started P1. I can tell that he has built up very good volcabury from his reading. He is using the words that he has learnt from his self reading in his writing. After comparing his word with two other of his classmates, I don't think he is behind at all.
Kau Yan encourages self learning. If your kid is eager to learn, there are a lot of opportunity that he can learn more at his level. The spelling quiz only have about 10 words, but unlimited bonus words related to the topic. My boy can spell 30 bonus words, and he is so happy that he is very eager to learn more. It is not easy to ask a boy to spell 30 words that describe a person. I have to teach him ways to remember the 30. They have mini sentences writing assignments weeks ago, which I know DBSPD is still not doing at least a week ago. Although teacher suggested to write 3 sentence, I encourage him to write three mini paragraph at his level.
As a parent, we can do a lot to enhance their academic results, but there is something unique that really attracts me to Kau Yan. The school does really well on life and Christian education which I am sure not a lot of school can offer. Not only are teachers super loving, and caring, you can simply feel their enthusiasm. They are like a role model to the kids. I can tell the kids love their teacher. They are their teacher and at the same time their friend. Don't even mention the principal, who will wait patiently for a student to tie his shoe laces.
The school is so thoughtful, and will do whatever they can if it is good for the students. A new learning center is built with theme teaching. All the time, the principal told us that class size is about 30, but they changed it to class size of a bit over 20 in the beginning of the year without increasing the tuition. Where else can you find a private school doing things only for the sake of the children. I think it deserves government grant.
I am thankful and very satisfied with his school. I think he can learn how to learn in a comfortable and not very stressful atmosphere.

I think that they are not hard. As the school visit during interview, I saw P2 study a story book; which is my boy studying at home nowadays. Suppose it is a 5 - 6 years story boy.
