Dear joanneheungyy,

Please be patient to the result, the school had scheduled too many functions in this few days and they are exhausted(ie. P1 reg., P2 and higher grade new intake, student practising the coming fund raising music concert at different location, marking  student assessment scripts and preparing school report to existing parent at 7-7-06). I don't think you will have the result before wed. this week since concert will hold on Tue. night. Anyway, parent had the 2nd interview chance will be much easier to contact school afterwards (if failed) and school will accommodate as long as seats available (that's my feeling towards principal Lau).

Thanks for your feedback. I have no intension to blame the school for the long delay and too short an interview. This is life, sometimes, it is a matter of luck. Also, I am mentally prepared for admin. issues with new schools like CKY.
One teacher mentioned the result will be around early July, but no exact date.

I am not the member of PTA since I had lots of unschedule work. My son is in P3 now. Also be patient to the result.

Hi, father_ho,

I've walked through quite a lot of your sharings regarding the education systems you've undergone and the one you've picked for your kid.
I've similiar study path as yours or most of the local Hong Kong parents nowadays -> the terrible "duck stuffing" system.  Yes, we scored high in public exams but it also killed some of our lateral thinking cells.  I discovered this when I came out to work in a business world also during my MBA study with a team of classmates with different cultural backgrounds.  I appreciate the believe of CKY and their model of education, but, allow me having a bit of concerns.  That is, they're not going to have any exams / tests (correct me if I'm wrong), will it be too protecting them from pressure.  I can imagine the kids there are studying happily and they will be having the knowledge also, but as being a "normal" parent who already used to have tests / exams in my entire student life.  there's still some worries for me.  Hope you understand my points and would be glad to have your sharings.

另外,我還有一個問題, 本人是傳統填鴨式教育制度低下培育出來, 英文水平一般; 看見一些CKY的家長說, 小五,小六便要寫約1000字的畢業論文, 那麼我們可以怎樣幫助小朋友? 希望現就讀CKY的家長可以解答.

Dear monkeymei,

In the past, I also stick to traditional teaching method so I placed my son in one of the famous kindergarten in Kowloon Tong which had already lots of dictation, test etc even at that level and my son's performance was very good. I remember clearly on that day of CKY interview, I discovered he can spell, write lots of english, chinese term but actually didn't understand what it is and even not knowing what the teacher was talking about. I am lucky(may be is my son's luck) that CKY is not well known at that time and he could be admitted(to my surprise). Then I switched my young daughter to another similar approach kindergarten and she is now smart enough to my expectation.

In replying to your concern of lack of test and exam. in CKY, I can tell they did have tests, dictation and assessment(just another term) but you never know it before. It's good idea to be like that not because the student can escape from studying but it can truely reflect what is their ability and I can feel they deliberately separate student in different class of different strength, weakness and direct different strength teacher to cater(help) them. It is not like traditional school just band the class but rather they believe student must have certain strength, weakness area and in the early stage of primary, it can be rectified.

For the lack of pressure and become too "free". I can say if I were the student and there is exam., as long as I can score high marks then I finish the job and who can blame me on. This will in effect stop them improve themselves. Just as my daughter's case, she may found P1 textbook is too simple but if that is the true case, she can continue study the reading scheme far more and improving other areas of weakness rather than just satisfying the score.

I know it is quite difficult for parent like us to adopt totally different study approach. We are so care about our next generation and don't want they are the "white mouse" but when you actually come across, you will know the different.

Dear amandalyy2002,

I can tell that is the true case they are very "free" in class and don't expect they sit quietly and face the teacher like a stone. I remembered my wife went to the first P1 class observation day and tell me the place were just like a circus and didn't know whether they could learn or not. At that time, it worried us a lot and we kept a close eye on him. Three years gone and up till now, I still think I did make a good choice and my wife do not say anything now. So if you feel you cannot accept this kind of "free" learning approach, better don't apply this school.

Dear father-ho
I can imagine what is the "circus" mean.  My child is studying at Victoria English Primary School now.  They are almost the same atmosphere while they are in class.
Will they line up at hall every morning?  Victoria Principle or head teacher will say something to student in English at around 5 mins.

Hi, father_ho,

first of alls, thx very much for your sharings.  And, also thx for understanding my worries as being a "normal local hk parent" but struggling between the traditional education which we've walked through vs a totally different model - "circus" way.  Excuse me for using this phrase, just make it into an interesting phrase, hope other CKY parents won't mind.
some other points I'd like to bring up for discussions and hope you'd share your point of views:
1. I admit that traditional way of tests, exams do pressure the students a lot, but it also make the students to have something to target and to certain extent, it's something measureable.  When we are dealing with business, we've no way to evaluate our performance base on figures like profits we make, product / brand awareness acheived, market share obtained,...will it be too late for the students to figure out this reality if they get used to the "no pressure, no figure" world
2. "circus" learning environment - I do come across some staffs in my teams who were educated aboard and of course used to the "active learning" model and never just listen to the teachers.  Excuse me that their behaviour as my sub-ordinate is a bit too abnormal,... for example, I could never make them listen to my briefing of 5 mins, they always jump out something during my conversation of only 5 mins,...and of course some other strange behaviour, no need to mention in here.  Of course, I appreciate their creative thinkings and board exposures but they are just not bearing those "hard-working and being determine to work" as other local colleagues.  I do agree that I'm a greedy person, I aim to provide the environment, guidiance and supports to my girl that she'll become a well-educated person with beautiful minds, dedicated to her work, determine to what she decided to do, and of course, with good personalities.Could you give me some insights to achieve that, is CKY align with what I aim, I don't want to make a wrong decision in my girls' future, hope you understanding my points, and let me repeat myself that I'm not against the education model of CKY, I'm just lack of knowledge in it.

     I want to share my opinions with you. I think that traditional schools have their advantages. However, the existing examination system kills the kid's curisoity. Starting from P.3, the kid needs to face the TSA.. Many schools focus on the result. Thus, the children need to  do many many practice. Generally, the language environment is not good for the kids. As my professors said, nowadys , the English standrad of many Year1 students  is quite poor. I agree that examination is a tool for measurement. But like the exisiting system in HK, it seems that the examination is only for testing the kid's memory. In HK, e.g. for Maths examination, the kids need to memorize all the formulas and rules.
However, in the foreign countries, the examination is a tool to test the student's application and understanding. Thus, they provide all the fomulas for the students. I believe that formative assessment is more reliable than the existing examination. I am the product of the traditional education. I really want my kids to have a happy school life which allows them to explore and develop their talents. The most important thing is to allow them to have curiosity and critical thinking. Thx.

thx so much for your sharings, in fact, I learnt a lot on this "active learning" model from you guys / gals' sharings. thx again.

I also agree that formative assessment is more reliable than the current exam executed in those traditional schools.  Plus, after I walked through some parents sharings in other threads, both of them and their kids pressure a lot from the tests / exams. Especially when I learnt that some primary students are having the private tuition since early primary life, are they really so bad in academic? Could those private tutors inspire them to have initiatives in learning? I've been a private tutor since I was at F2 till entire U. life, my students started from primary students to high schools, yes, I'm a good private tutor in teaching them to score high, but sorry to say, I was not able to inspire them since I was very pressure, too. I need to make them pass or score high in the exam.  So, sorry to say, for some students who are already with very poor foundations, I really could not help to change their mentality about studying but what I can help is teach them how to answer according to the marking scheme.  Sorry for this.

Back to my own case, I really don't want my girl to have the school life with tons of homework and still need to have a private tutor in order to keep herself in the so-called "elite class".  As we all know, most of the teachers won't care a lot of the students in non-elite class as per the traditional schools.  I don't want to ruin my realtionship with my girl just because of the marks in exam.

If the "active learning" model could address my expectations of inspiring my girl to learn, it's be very nice. Whether my girl can be a well-educated person ultimately, it'll depend on her quality and "hardship".
However, despite of expecting her to be well-educated, I'm also concern about her softskills like personalities, EQ and AQ.

Will she be able to face pressure when she come out to work, will she be bearing the character of work hard, not only work smart? sorry that I've these uncertainties since I come across some "examples" in my office that they might be too "creative" in some ways and might not be very willing to listen to order.  I mean those girls who studied aboard since they were very young, it seems that they always want to work out the project in their own ways but not aligning with the team's direction.

In short, I think I'm concerning on the kids' discipline, could you share me your thoughts?

整體來說VP Primary不夠VP Kingdergarten來得完善 (意見由一些家長從幼稚園到小學).  他們給老師自由度很多. 所以老師質數很重要, 當然每班不同.
外圍因素學校是不錯, 由其是他們的新校舍. 家長將準備送小朋友到國外而希望她打好中文水平為佳.  希望這些資料可以幫忙.
