After my son studing in TSL for aound 1 month, so far I feel pretty satisfied on all espects, except that I have some comments on English subject (sorry that this is all my personal opinion and it may be wrong).
- there is lack of transparency on what the kids learnt
- there is not much exercise doing at home and not much extra activities like that for Chinese, e.g. "88 reading", "a day a read" etc.
- what I feel disappointed is that when I saw the result from the Password#1, my son only got 6 marks out of 10. I understand that "mark is not important", but all my son mistakes are due to spelling, like he spelled "mit" for "meet" and "uld" for "old". I feel good that my son already tried his best and use his own phonic system to spell the word as we never asked him to spell "meet", "old", "years" etc... Also, what we heard from the school is that there suppose to have "no textbook and no dictation". I thought the idea is good but in the implementation, it doesn't seem to be.
Here are my few suggestions to the school :
1) like my son in the kindergarten, every beginning of the month, there is a sheet listing down all the sentences he will learn (this is expect to recongize not spelling) and list down the vocab. words that suppose the kids can spell;
2) give a little bit homework a day so that the kids can practise more and add English books into the "88 superman" program or add some activities to motivate the kids to read more English books
3) In the "marking scheme", give half mark if the kids can provide the answer even though the spelling is wrong. Or provide some choices for them to select etc..
Again, this is my personal opinion and I understand that my expectation may be too high but I just want we can provide a more effective environment for the kids to learn English happily and effectively (having said so, he still feels very happy with English, maybe only myself not feel so comfortable.)
Other comments from the parents are more than welcome or can teach me how to teach my son spelling and more easy to recongnize English words. Many thanks. |
