Sharing of IB vs NSS

My daughter also does not want to take HL Maths though her teacher said she is capable to.  As I know, if target at medicine, engineering, economics, or QF at  U, Maths HL will be a must.  For other subjects, seems SL in Maths is good enough... am I right?

My recommendation is sent a email to the admission officer and seek for clarification.

Many thanks for your detailed explanation and comments.  I’ve got two key messages.  The students should target to achieve maximum scores by stretcing their limits and pick the compulsory subjects required by the targeted programme.  So, if the targeted programme has yet to be confirmed, picking traditional subjects seems to be more safe.

I didn’t review the syllabus of B&M either.  I agree it is easier to study B&M than Economics but I think it is not easy to get high scores in B&M.  Very often, business and management is sort of Arts.  It is not well structured and well defined by theoretical model.  Business results are always unpredictble and driven by implementation rather than just by planning.  So, a young student can hardly persuade an assessor admit his work is great business solutions.

Actually, L&L is similar to the previous A2. Teachers should be capable to handle the change of course and there are always teaching and exam materials.

Can you be more specific? Which programme are you interested in? I do think that emailing is a nice way, but it also depends on other requirements. Do theses subjects have a minimum IB grade? Are they highly competitive and selective? If yes, I will probably choose SL as it's more safer to get a 7 and you don't need as much time for revision as HL. In the past few years, especially this year (MAY), maths HL exam is very unpredictable according to some candidates. Some questions are even harder than HKAL pure mathematics or HKCEE additional maths. Some of them (locals)who consider as the best in their own schools didn't get a 7. I mean those who won prizes in the Maths Olympiad, Stanford Maths Competition, etc. If the reply is either HL or SL, please reconsider this matter and your kid's ability.

If we are not 100% sure about this, we shouldn't say so. Unless you have confirmation from IBO or universities.

Talking to more teachers, I have the feeling L and L&L are similar at HL/SL respectively.

it's not 100% same but it's similar. I've consulted several others including  professors and teachers. Literature requires you to read a lot of books since the beginning of the school year while my daughter (L&L) hasn't started reading any of them now.

My point is L equivalent to L&L, not L ~ A2.

L&L half Literature and half on business communication, like advertisement etc... You can check the syllabus at SL for comparison.

We shouldn't use A1 A2 any more. From my son's English teacher, they are all A, stand for mother language with two streams, only pure lietrature or not; as pure literature may not be so practical like L&L.....

just found some information about the new language course L&L

"Language A: language and literature is a new course, introduced into group 1 to provide greater
choice. It offers a particular focus on developing an understanding of the constructed nature of
meanings generated by language. Two parts of the course relate to the study of language and two to the study of literature. This course offers the same level of challenge as the language A: literature course and, for the first time, offers students in group 1 the opportunity to engage in the rigorousanalysis of non-literary texts."

I appreciated kesnia's contribution in BK, I clarify the standards bewteen  L and L&L to ensure parents understand the new syllabus.

i'm not denying that L&L's difficulty to L as they are both A courses. What I'm saying is that the materials they learn is similar to the previous A2, but of course more than that.
