Re: Letter Land
Hi ALAL,
Q - After you do the blending games with her, do she automatic know how to read out the words in English books?
A - I have not particularly checked this with her. But after a blending game, when I show her the sight words again, she usually has no difficulty in sounding them out.
Q - And can she use phonic for dictation i.e. when she hear an English word, she can dictate it out by phonics (I assume your kid is in local school so dictation will cover some phonetically difficult word like 'ow' 'ou' sound)?
A - Basically, she can apply phonics to her dictation. When there is an anomaly, I simply tell her that the word is naughty. Yet my observation is that even for exceptional words, they tend to come in groups. My child once came across BRIGHT /brait/. She did not seem to be able to spell it very well. As she knew how to spell RIGHT, I drew her attention to it. With a click of her mind, she got the spelling BRIGHT correct, and forever after.
When it comes to spelling, I think even if a child knows all the letter combinations that produce the same sound, still he/she needs to remember when to use which.
