My son learns simplified Chinese at SIS, and he learn traditional Chinese at Kumon for 4 years (stopped at P5).

He read bible in traditional Chinese, but other Chinese books are in simplified Chinese.

We may find a lot of simplified Chinese books from 深圳。

Dear chanms,
My girl will start from PY1 with SIS the coming Sept.  I would like to know when is the best time to send the child to Kumon (chinese).  I want her to start from the first stage.
Why your son stopped at P5?  Can he write and read TC?

My son started Kumon (Maths, Chinese and English) at P1.
Because:
1. to establish a habbit to do homework. You know, most IS does not have much assignments.
2. Chinese - learn TC, Maths - improve his calculation speed, English - additional reading time

Because SIS PY stage, students learn Chinese 拼音 first, instead of writing Chinese characters.
So, no need to start Kumon at PY stage.

We stopped Kumon at P5, because SIS have 2-3 homework nearly every night (except CCA days). And my son had to spare time for his long term habbit, e.g. swimming, piano...

As children grow, we need to give up some choices, and trim down to our targets.

He can read TC, but he can't write TC.

Thanks for your detail explanation.  You have mentioned that at P.5, he has 2-3 homeworks every night.  May I know did he establish a habbit to do the homework by himself?

When did he start to learn piano?  Did you join the swimming class with PTA inside SIS?

When will the children start the after school activities?  From PY2?

Hi,

Does anyone know if Shatin Junior School is using Simplified Chinese or Traditional  Chinese to teach written Chinese?

My son will go there in August to start Year 1. Please share. Now, he's not interested in learning Chinese. In fact, he doesn't read or write Chinese.  

Should I begin introducing Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese characters by myself at home?
Please advise and share. Thanks.

As far as I know, simplified Chinese is taught in all ESF primary schools.

我覺得IS用簡體字是"先知先覺" 絕對不是"悲劇"
就連 聯合國亦規定 簡體中文 為 中文之法定語言
你想想 中國內地十幾億人都用簡體字
只欠HK & Taiwan (不夠1億人) 還延用繁體中文
現外國人學中文 都學簡體中文

可能不過10年 遲早 本港的中文將會改用簡體字
只待 現職/將來 中文教師 普通話過關後
她們下一步可能要進修 簡體中文了

文字根本一直在變，
中國的文字，有過象形文字，甲骨文，鐘鼎文，

文字本身都係符號罷了，
我地學了英文幾十年，都未必個個知 26 個字母的來歷。

Do you know that Chinese Characters are structured/ made by six methods.  We can tell why a Chinese Character structure, why it pronounce like that, by the Traditional Chinese Characters, but most of the simplified characters have lost this function - this may explain why learning Chinese is getting more difficult, foreigners cannot easily manage them - the system is "lost".  

I think Chinese should start learning from traditional characters.  Yes, Chinese Characters are changing from generation to generation, but the basic structures do not change that far, if you really know why they were made and used.  There was a simplified character proposal in China in 50', it contained about 2500 characters.  They are also frequent used characters.  In fact, there is a trend in Mainland that the character is turning from simplified to traditonal nowaday, you may find out what I say if you compare those books published 10 years ago with the new.  

Because some simplified characters are used for several meanings, being unable to express the idea accurately.
