Re: St. Paul Co-edu

Sudoku,

There are lots of DSS schools you get to complain if you think there are too many Mercedes/BMW/RR: DBSPD, PLKCKY, St. Paul's College and every DSS charged $30K or above.

And as far as I know (not too far), nearly every 'international school' (which are by definition all private schools), such as GSIS are much more expensive than 弘立書院.

So you want to launch a crusade? Or just against SPCCPS? It's interesting to note that you seems favor DBSPD more, at least for the moment. Perhaps you didn't notice the traffic jam created by the parents there?

Re: St. Paul Co-edu

circleda,

I against the admission of DSS school of St Paul Co-edu, which is not fair for most of family in HK.
As per my understanding, DSS schools got the government support, that means it got the support from the tax.

For DBSPD, at least I found the boys were accepted for 2nd interview are smart and intelligent.

To be fair, there are smart and intelligent kids accepted by SPCC every year.

Re: St. Paul Co-edu

I think the SPCC tends to maintain their 'family' with saving 70% places for old boys and girls' families so as the those members of thier church.
It is not a matter of fair or unfair but at least SPCC is so honest to tell the public that they have only 30% places for other 'non-members'. You may apply if you are willing to fight down the other competitors.

You can see Benz, Porsche and other 'cool' car outside DGJS DBJS or other famours and international school but not just SPCC.

Don't know who said that parents if not attend in the 1st interview may therefore rejected by SPCC or the kid should have no chance to accept by the school.

I'm the one who didn't go with my kid, and my husband too. (as we believe the legend that we have 0 chance to get in, just want a 'practice' for my kid before attend the DG interview). And,  we are so suprise that we got the chance for the 2nd interview and the school finally accept my kid. Therefore, i think they really search for 'suitable' kid for their school without any consideration of the family background.

gogochurch,

As a parent of SPCCPS yourself, are you in the same category? What is the percentage of the "minority" there? And could you please share the school life in SPCCPS?

Thank you!

Hi,

Some observations in SPCCPS :-

1. Parents who are either very rich and hire tutors, or well educated professionals devoting themselves to be a full time mother.

2. Many kids already show their special talents at a very young age, such as being highly observant, learn very fast, are highly motivated, love challenges, and some can read Harry Potter at Primary One.

Not really.  A lot of students take school bus. There are also many Japanese cars.  Not many parents that show off.

I agree to Onionmummy's observation too.

Unluckily, I am only a full time working class, neither rich nor a full time mother.  Luckily, my child could take care of herself since kindergarten.

The school life - many bright kids, and more 'best of the other school' joining them every year.  Most students are motivated themselves to study and stay ahead in their form.  One of the slogans is 'work hard and have fun'.

Hi chingchingmom,

It doesn't matter if others are hiring tutoris, it depends if you believe in tutor yourself.  Many full-time mother researches in educational methods that suit their kids best.

Time is limited for working mums, so I can only teach my kids how to study and be 'responsible'.  SPCCPS(MR) also teaches kids to be responsible, in the 2nd month of P1, and that helps me a lot.  We also read and try new projects together.  Since they commence schooling (in kindergarten), daily homework, quiz and dictation are their own responsibility.  Even in exams, I can only offer guidance and trust their management.  Do you believe that less responsible parents breed more responsible kids ?

Dear gogochurch,

I'm also a full time working mum, in fact, I spent most of the time on training my kid to be responsible.
I believed that lazy mum out come the responsible kids.

Re: St. Paul Co-edu

It is a very interesting topic.

Share my views:

1) there is no such fair system for admission under EMB.  Even you apply for a band-X school, if you graduated from the school, your child would have extra points in admission.

2) there is only such thing if the admission system is favourable to you.  Last year, when I attent the briefing session, Ms. Lee said there is NOT more than 70% of seats resvered for related person, which can be lower.  One parent quiried Ms Lee that it is NOT fair to him as the 70% might be lower.  He is a alumni.

3) I agree that SPCC accpets a lot of children with strong family background.  Pls. note that if these people apply other school, they will be accpeted as well.  It is not only SPCC pefer these appliants, but most school do.  However, these applicants prefer SPCC which make us as normal faimily not favourable.

4) Hiring tutor or not is just personal choice.  I do think tutor can help your child finish homework, but nothing more.  Most of the relaly bright students do not need tutor.

5)  Some said DBSPD boys are more smart than SPCCPS boys/girls.  I doubt.  As P1 level, SPCCPS students are very mature.

6) I observe that there may be not more than 50 cars for 360 students waiting for pick up after school at Kennedy Rd.  Others are either taking school bus or pick up from family.  Is the percentage high?  There are MB/RR/BMW or whatever expensive cars, but I can say than most of the cars are Japanese family car.

Just some observation.

agree.

Re: St. Paul Co-edu

Yes, this is an interesting topics.

I reckon I am not arguing but trying to be skeptical.

My thoughts:

1. Rich kids are in waiting list does not violate the "belief" of their advantage here because he/she is not among the top 200, who are either very bright or wealthy+bright. I mean there are also OTHER rich kids. Only being "rich" will be adequate, it is not necessary to be "very rich".

2. "叻既先入到" can never be wrong, but the point is, given two kids with same performance, the wealthier one is very likely to be picked, when only one place is available

3. DSS is subsidised by tax payers. However, the selection criteria is not objective (wealthy or not does count!) if point 2 is true

4. Hiring tutor or not is NOT just a personal choice. It is necessary to some people. I can think of two cases:

a. busy dad and a mom with irregular working hours when they don't want their kids to stay up too late

b. rich kid with mom who does not speak or write English. can this kid learn better english by himself? If you are that rich dad, will you (or can you) commit to take it up? (It is the situation of my friend. No offense at all.)

Again, the above is by no means absolute. Just that we are not seeing the whole picture. (may be I am the only one to take it seriously. Ha.)

Lazy Papa,

There is nothing right or wrong, good or bad with hiring tutors.  It is just a matter of personal preference.  There are cases, quite exceptional I think, that tutors would become a must.

For case (a) that you quote,  I myself is a busy and poor parent who cannot afford to hire tutor.  Maybe if I could afford, I would think otherwise ?  Maybe !! I only check my child's work over the weekend, and my child checks herself over the weekdays.  I agree that many SPCC students are quite mature.  And so, a tutor is not a must.

For case (b), I think the rich papa you mention should know English himself and can teach his son, if he chooses to. Of course he can choose to spend his prescious time to teach him things more important than English, but that is a matter of personal preference.

gogochurch:

From your posts, I find you an objective and humble parent.  What I'm guessing is that you must have impressed the principal with your way of speaking during your child's interview!

When people think about applying to "dream schools" many of them focus on thier children's accomplishment/performance. Yet there's another key factor that affects the result--the parents' manner. Many teachers from famous schools told me that they are actually looking for parents who manage to "discipline their child" during the interview.  It's amazing to see how indulgent/violent/"powerless" some parents may be during the interview...

Considering that this is the case, I guess it'd be rather difficult for my nephew to get there......Now it's not his fault, but his father's!

Hi Vernique 2005,

Thanks for your compliments.  I think most of the credit goes to my child, who has been looking after herself well.  I am just the absent minded mother who is always chased by my child to sign papers and assignment book.  But much thanks goes to God who has been taking good care of my child.  He has a plan for everyone he creates, and in prayers, we read his plan and there's no need to speculate.

In this forum there are many speculations about the objectivity of the SPCC's admission criteria, but 'faith' is an element that has not been raised.  I do not mean the '5' or '10' extra religious marks in the Government's allocation system, but the enlightment of God in the process.  The school attracts me because it is run with faith and love.
Do you agree ?
