evatsoihk,

Hi, I think your kid will be well-nurtured if you trust and support the school.

You can try to watch English channel instead of Chinese(Cantonise) channel. ATV and Pearl channels  both have very good children programme @ 4-6 p.m. You could also try to let you kid watch English news.
Some VCDs such as Hi 5, Richard Scarry (Busy town), My fair lady, The Sound of Musics, The Cat In The Hat- Dr Sue, Jimmy Neutron,Oliver Twist and Charlie  & Choco Factory etc also could help in learning English.

"Reading" do you refer to pronunciation? If, it is yes. Please don't be so worried as SIS will teach you kid phonics such as how to pronounce "ch", "sh" "th" ,silent E etc. It is very interesting.
For "vocabulary" -SIS always encourages its pupils to read more. This problem can be overcome by read more.
If, I am not wrong there is book bag for PY pupil and parents are encouraged to read (selected story book) to their kids.

Let's learn together with our kids, sometimes they can be our teacher.
I believe you can help your kids, be more confidence.

Smile!

1。無論該學生是來自新加坡的家庭還是香港本地家庭,其英語十分顯著的“新加坡”口音,相對十分刺耳;
2。數學不錯;

My son's secondary school (local DSS) has ISI students. They are smart.

Unless you look for perfection, I believe that SIS is a good school.

After so many years of working in the commercial field, I don't think accent (except that it is totally non-communicable) is a crucial factor in determining one's success in job.

What type of curriculum you want and whether your child suit SIS mode of teaching is, instead, more important.

I totally agree with thankful.

My two children are studying in SIS.  Singaporean accent used to be my main concern but it is no longer.  The accent do come up when they play with their classmates but not with other children (from other countries).  Different countries have different accents.  Accent can be varies even in the same countries, from east to west or north to south. The most important is that they can express themselves in proper English.

My two girls are more than happy to go to school everyday.  SIS has a good balance of Chinese and Englishand.  Yes, SIS has more homeworks than other IS but it is managable.  Of course, it is up to individual to pick a right school to suit your needs.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Bravo !!!!!!!!!!!!
I just love the way you explained about SIS !
Acent is always not a major concern of mine !
My children tune their channels when they meet
people fron different places !
I'm a singaporean who's been living overseas for
more than 18 years and I was graduated from
UCLA.When I meet my own people I can be so singlish but when I communicate with people from
the west,my american acent flows alony naturally !
You're so right about acent ! Sean Connery has a very strong scottish acent but that does not create
any negative impact on him !
Great to know someone like you in this forum !
Keep in touch !

Regarding the accent, I totally agree with thankful. Although my little one is still in PY1, that is what my friends (who has got 2 children in SIS P4 and P6) told me all about.

You know too little about Singapore culture & Singaporean. We learn English as we want to conquer knowledege and the latest technology, going global and increase competitive advantage.
Who care about Singlish?
I only know my kids will face communication problems if, they do not speak English & Manadarin.
I also know that if they  do not write Chinese & English, they will have problem to obtain the latest inforation in many areas (financial, bio-science, international business, politics and economics)
There are much more thing to learn in SIS other than English. My kids are not born to lear to speak Oxford English/Beijing Chinese only. But I do not deny that need to use English/Chinese as a powerful tool to develop themselves in to a people who could contribute to nation's success.
Like ivylove, I enjoy using la, lo, may, kena, sabo when I talk to my Singaporean freinds.
Sometimes my kids speak Singlish too, but both of my daughters are top students in the level.(They are also well-behaved kids). So, what? I think the worst case is can't even speak Cinglish/Singlish.
My daughter was selected  to sit for GEP screening test back in Singapore in Oct 06. The basic of this test is those who sit for the test are in the top 10% of age cohort (in Singapore). So, WHO CARE ABOUT SINGLISH?
The most importnat this to know " He who knows not himself and the enemy is bound to perish in all battles."

Singapore is the rival of Hong Kong.   No doubt there is discrimination.

Please tell me how to change my Chinlish ? To my understanding, the use of words, the way to present...are easier to be changed and polished. However, acent is very different as it's deeply rooted. I borned in HK and speak English with very strong local accent.   I keep learning English but could not do anything on acent. My son has adopted a little Singlish from his nanny who has been working many years in Singapore. She has only took care of him for 1.5 years. And I let him learnt English from British for few years. However,he still speaks a bit Singlish that seems deeply rooted. Could u share with me how can our acent be changed?

Thanks!

I think when we talk about acent,it's neither only adding 'la','lo','may' nor always say "Can".Intonation is an important matter.

I don't want to offend. However, when you live in Singapore,or you are a Singaporean, it's easy to say that you don't care about acent. Just like many HK ppls, including me,do not care how strange we are when we speak Cantonese style English, because a lot of ppls speak in the same way.

I can say,Singapore gov. do care about Singlish.
If u go to the tourist centre and talk to the staff there, u will understand.

I think our Gov. is very concern about "broken Englsih" - Phua Chu Kang style.
For example,
Makan already or not?
Don't play play!
Wa! blue black!
Ahhh! got blood
Like that can one may!
Don't tekan la!
go already!
see already!
Three ( read as tree) person

For me speak proper English with Singapore acent is okay. As I had never felt my Hong Kong friends who speak English with Canto acent are irritating. My Japanese/ Korean friends also speak english with Jap/Kor acent.  As we have to learn to respect and accommodate who are differrent from us. Beside, I also admire Hong Kong people's diligence. Hong Kong people speak Cinglish so what ? Hong Kong is still prosperous and progressive.

Is ISF an international school? It's school fee is more expensive than some of the international schools.

My elder girl is in SIS P5, I will put my younger one next year. I agree that it's impossible to avoid all singlish although the school employs 1/3 foreigners to teacher lower form class english. Yes, classmates are also affected.  I also found out when my girls spoke to an american boy, it's not easy to find out singlish.

I personally not too mind about accents, I belief from different accents, my girl can learn something from that person.  ie. my girl will know more about Scotland from a Scotland teacher, know more about France from a Frech teacher.  They are claimed not speak royal english.

Other than accents, I think SIS is a good school.  My girl enjoying going to school. Her knowledge builds up quickly for these few years. Strong CCA support...
