咁在St.Jo裏,如該小六學生的平均分約85-87,會否成為升中的邊緣人?!

My son told me before that he was frequently bullied by two classmates at his kinder.

During a recent parents' social functioning, I personally witnessed one of the two boys who bullied my son hitting and kicking others (including my son and EVEN a girl classmate!) with HEAVY BLOW.

And THIS BOY WILL BE ATTENDING Primary 1 at St. Paul in the coming September.:

I think your boy is lucky

Re: St. Paul's Boys Primary School vs St. Joseph, which one is better?

LLT,

This also will happen in all schools including St. Joseph but our boys' disclipine will be well-trained afterward.

Compare with other DSS, private schools, St.Paul is the best choice for boys on HK side , of course, except St.Paul co-edu. And Miss Chan (the principal) is a open-minded lady who carry out a series of reform to higher her boys' competetion and hope to see they will promote to St.Paul College but not Kings.

Teresa,

其實都唔係淨少少位,College有5班,以前收足40, whole class 有200人, transfer to DSS , 變小班教學,30-35 X 5, 都有at least 150位。有咁多位都唔肯收

Re: St. Paul's Boys Primary School vs St. Joseph, which one is better?

Dear holokmom,

On hearing that the boys' discipline will be well-trained afterward at St. Joseph, I feel a bit at ease for the time being.

Bullying between students is one of the worries that I have on my son's primary education.  This is because I was once complained by the kinder that my son had been 'engaged in fighting'.  I was surprised on hearing this as he had always been commented as being a good boy by his previous TWO kinders.  Further, he never hits his little brother at home when bullied or beaten by the latter.  On enquiry with my son, he said he was beaten up by the two classmates and had no alternative but to fight back by way of self-defence.

I didn't quite believe what my son had explained to me until I personally saw what the boy had done to others.  Only at this point of time, I realised that my son was in fact a victim in the 'fighting' at his kinder.

What I'm worrying now is that if my son becomes used to taking self-defence action as forced to do so through his experience at his last kinder, then it is easy for him to obtain 2 'big mistakes' at St. Joseph and the consequence is disastrous to me (because his little brother is yet to enter St. Joseph 3 years later).

Dear smile 168,

You said that St. Paul's "目前中學成績欠佳乃政府舊派位制所致".  With due respect, I am unable to share your view, for I don't regard this can be a good and logical explanation.

In this connection, please note that St. Joseph's College, La Salle College and Diocesan Boys' School (its DBSPD was my dream school if son could get admitted, but even if my son was admitted, I won't hesitate to give up its place after I have obtained St. Joseph at the lucky draw) etc, all suffered from the same degree of handicap when this year's Form 5 students were allotted to them 5 years ago.

Dear LLT,

I don't understand what do you mean of this para:

Re: St. Paul's Boys Primary School vs St. Joseph, which one is better?

Dear LLT,

Do you mean you give up the place of DBS? Why?   or Do you mean after your boy got the place in St. Jo, you didn't care the place in DBS. even he got it in DBS, you also will give it up?

Don't worry about the fighting, once your son complained to you, call class teacher for help. You should try always appear at school and let his classmate know you are your son's dad/mom.(I gusee you're mom?) It's very useful to understand their relationship. Small fighting happens every school especailly in boys primary. Ask your son to tell "prefect go go".

Some interesting thing I heard from parents are their children always complained about their argument and fighting disputes but they are good friends at last ? So, don't worry, let him enjoy his school life and study hard-working.

Pleasure to share the school things with you on BK.

Re: St. Paul's Boys Primary School vs St. Joseph, which one is better?

Dear holokmom,

Thank you for your advice on the fighting issue.

You're wong.  I'm a father and not the mother who is sleeping at the moment

In respect of the last paragraph in my last message, What I mean is that:-

From what I understand from simile 168 is (if I am not wrong) that the reason for St. Paul's students having no outstanding performance in the HKCEE this year is the result of the government's allocation of students that the school, to a certain extent, was deprived of its right in choosing students.  But that the situation may be changing as St. Paul has changed to a DSS and re-gains the unfettered right to select its own students after the DSS phenomenon was introduced a few years ago.  The new generation of St. Paul's students is forthcoming and their performance can be seen next year.

If what I understand above is correct, then it seems to me that the students of St. Joseph's College, La Salle College and Diocesan Boys' School who took HKCEE this years were also students allocated to them by the government (subject of course to some students who got directly promoted to the secondary school for having good performance at the primary school).

True as it may that the performance of La Salle College and Diocesan Boys' School is falling this year(but not St. Joseph's College as statistic shows the case that in term of the total number of students taking the examination vs. the total number of A obtained), they still have remarkable performance as compared with many others.

In the circumstances I cannot accept that St. Paul does not have a good performance recently is the direct and natural consequence of the government's allocation of students before it changed to a DSS.

What I did supplement in the bracket of my paragraph is that my son did apply DBSPD but failed after the 2nd interview.  However, even if my son was successful, I would have given up the seat as  he is now fortunate enough to have obtained a place at St. Joseph by lucky draw.

This is a practical commercial decision as St. Joseph is free of charge whereas DBSPD has a school fee of HK$3,800     Adding up other supplemental activities/lectures and miscellaneous expenses, I would make a conservative estimation that I might have to spend at least an average of around HK$10,000 for the boy's education at DBSPD, not to mention that I have a second son to receive primary education 3 years later!

Another reason that I would have given up the seat and choose St. Joseph (but this is only a reason known recently after the announcement of this year HKCEE result) is that DBS's performance is falling.  If I have to pay for the school fee, then the school must be worth for it.  To me, the only yardstick is the performance of the school in public examinations (I am a very simple and practical minded person indeed )  I never count those idealistic slogans such as making emphasis on 'all rounds educations and happy learning' etc, for we are living in a realistic world after all.

DBS今年有1個10A student.  DBSPD網站有公報會考成績。不過, 有D人話好似話差過以往result.  但比起其他普通中學, 都吾差ka.  DBS students 真係要加把勁, 否則, 都難保"一哥"地位。

Yes, DBS has one 10A student this year but, if my memory is correct, it has no 9A student.

Further, if the information I got is right, DBS will be changing to IB syllabus, and its primary divsion, i.e., DBSPD, is going to change to IB in 2008.  If this is materialised, its secondary students will no longer be required to sit for the HKCEE and subject to no public examination's scruntiny in future.

Personally, I am of the view that this is a smart and sensible approach to be taken by the school in changing to IB, since if you require parents to pay for its survival, the school must continue be able to show them an excellent and outstanding performance in public examinations.

DBS has one 10As students and 2 9As1B standents this year.

DBS will not all change to IB, I think maybe there is one or two class will change to IB, they just provide more choice for parents.

St Joe's HKCEE results is better than DBS this year, but DBS still got 253 A , it is still an excellent and outstanding public examinations result.

If you look back, you can find that St Joe got the very poor HKCEE result last year, there were 181 As and 6 students eligible for the Early Admission Scheme (EAS). Would you make a conclusion that St Joe's  performance is falling at that time?

This year, DBS get his worst HKCEE result in the history, but St Joe get his best, I think it is unfair to compare or make the conclusion which school is falling or rising. right?

I don't think SPC can attract  good students from other school.

Re: St. Paul's Boys Primary School vs St. Joseph, which one is better?

I heard that the teachers in St Peter school even warned their students not to fill the school name (SPC) in the secondary school application form, they said that if you fill in the form, no matter you put it in which position, you will have a great chance to be enrolled to that school.

LLT is right, if you cannot show you have excellent  public examination result, why I need to pay HKD38000 school fee a year.

Re: St. Paul's Boys Primary School vs St. Joseph, which one is better?

Andrew is right to have pointed out it is too early to draw a conclusion that DBS's performance is falling simply by looking at the result of just one single year.

But still I found it quite unsatisfactory for the principal of DBS, Mr Cheung, using the same unconvincing excuse to account for the school's performance this year – that some of their students would not have been admitted if the school bandings were not reduced from 5 to 3.  As I said earlier, St. Joseph, La Salle and many others were facing the same situation when their Form 5 students were admitted 5 years ago.

LLT, Sorry, out of your discussion topic, can you advise which kindys will have better chance of getting a place from St. Paul's Boys ? Is the interview conducted in Eng or Cantonese ? If I put my kid to international kindy, do you think the school will consider him ?

Re: St. Paul's Boys Primary School vs St. Joseph, which one is better?

esp,

I apologise that I am unable to answer your questions for I do not have any knowledge on St. Paul's Boys School.

I only applied St. Paul Co-ed, DBSPD and Alliance Primary School for my boy.  It is fortunate for me to have such a 'smart' boy who failed in all applications and thus save me a lot of money.

I once expressed my view in this forum that if I have to pay the school fee, I am only willing to pay for the aforesaid 3 schools and no further.
