I bought Letterland, because I find the stories of learning phonics is great.  But it takes me a lot of time to remember the characters, relationship to teach my baby.  My girl will start her N1 class in MingWai and they are using Jolly.  I read the details of Jolly and comments from BK moms and I find Jolly is easier.  I might let my girl to study Jolly outside as well.  Therefore I have decided to use Jolly.  Did you son learn Jolly / Letterland?

Did he learn Jolly Phonics from school? Will he be confused if his school is teaching another set of phonics?   My girl learns phonics (not jolly) from school, but seem she didn't learn well, I'm thinking to send her to learn Jolly outside, but I'm afraiding how can she handle 2 different sets of phonics.

When did your son start reading ORT?  My girl is 4 and just started stage 1+, but she can't read the words, so I read to her...

I am not familiar with MingWai kinder but it is quite early to learn Phonics in N1, isn't it?  It is easy to learn all the single sound but blending is really difficult for a 3yrs old kid(if he/she's mother tongue is chinese). Trust me, 真係唔使心急喎 :  :

I heard that ORT will have a new version this Sept.  Am I right?  It will be slightly different to the old version even though for Stage1!!

Hi Bob&Wendy,
Her school use "honics for Kids", they taught the
sounds of A-Z in K1.  She had only one phonics lesson per week, maybe it's not enough or maybe my girl learnt slow, I found my girl remembers some letter sounds only, but not all, and I never see her use phonics to 'read'.  I scanned her 1st term K2 phonics book, it teaches sounds of A-M again but with more vocabularies introduced, no 'blending', no 'digraphs' yet...  
Is it too early to except her 'can read' right now?     What's the time your son can read by himself, after all Jolly's 42 main sounds and 'blending'?   I've no experience on phonics, many thanks you share yours with me.

I think you should better find out the reason why she didn't handle it well.  OR just you think she didn't learn well??  Can u share more here??  Maybe we can have some more suggestion!!!

He just start a few months ago.  Your girl is still small.  Maybe she cannot handle the phonics skill/blending good, therefore, she cannot read by herself yet.  If u read the story to her, you can choose any other story book with "more" words   & also her favourite character.

I can share some my little experience with you.

My son started to read OST already.  Never read any ORT before.  He loves these books (stage 1) so much - especially Kipper - At School.

The most important thing you should know is how can attract your daughter to enjoy the story.  For example, facial express and sound or play role are the useful method.

So, whatever you buy any books, the most success key is let them to enjoy.

Will you buy all books for each stage for your son?
I just started stage 1+, and find there are at least 30 books for this stage, patterned storeies, more patterned stories A, first sentences, more first sentences A etc...
My girl likes these ORT books, she already read almost 10 books in 4 weeks, I'm not sure should I keep letting her read all books, or just pick one or two series for her and keep concentrate reading these series for a period of time.  What's your comment?

Hi all,

It's been a long time since my last message here.  I started to search the ORT books at the public library ever since I got to know that they were available at the public libraries for borrowing, as, after all, it is my habit to borrow books for my daughter every fortnight.  My daughter loves turning the pages and see the pictures therein very much though I don't know if she really enjoys reading.  She is so excited to read them every time I bring new books from the library (貪新忘舊﹞. That's why I try not to be lazy to go.

Guess what?  Not only did I find the ORT books at the public library near my office, what's even more delighting, they have just bought more new ORT books in early July.  I was even the first or second one to borrow them.

Most of the time, I will try to select stage 1 or 2 books for my girl as she is still small.  As the books are borrowed, I cannot let her follow any particular sequence.  It all depends on which books I pick from the library.  I just wonder if anyone can tell me whether there is any particular way to use this book series?  Are the kids supposed to learn English through the series in any systematic way?  I simply read with her.  Those mothers who have been expereinced users/readers of the series, would you share how you use the books?  Thanks a lot!

You mean you only buy the patterned stories book for each series and you won't buy more patterned stories right?
