Can you tell me more about ESF kindergarten?
I and my husband also want my kid have a happy school life.  But I am afraid if he can't get a seat in ESF P1 if he is not good in English eough.
Is it just English learning environment, or have some mandarin lessons?

ESF kinders mainly use English for the teaching media. They start to introduce some mandarin in the class, but the time they spend in mandarin is insignificant. Below is the original Putonghua Curriculum from ESF kinders website :

We offer a strand of Putonghua across all classes. Our Putonghua specialist supports the class teachers in their base area by offering key Putonhgua vocabulary related to the topic or activity that the teacher has planned. They also introduce a range of songs, rhymes, colours and numbers. During the children’s open play session, the teacher interacts with the children using Putonghua. The Putonghua teacher also plans activities to introduce all children to Chinese culture and festivals.

After you read it, you might feel that they don't say anything is concreted about their Putonghua Curriculum.

Hi slam30:
1. I have heard from somebody that the Kids from ESF's Tsing Yi Kind. has bigger chance to apply P1 ESF other schools, is that true?? Why??

2. Also, I never heard that "kid" speak Mandarin during in the past year, so I wonder if ESF T.Y.'s  Mandarin class is NOT so enough or only the own problem of that "kid"???

Why Yes??

The parents of that kid doesnt know Mandarin.
They also doesnt know English but only very basic standard too.
So that's why I have asked "slam30" that how hard to the kid if he wants to get in P1 ESF without good English family background.

As I said before, the parents of the kid always "push up" the kid's English. They dont have good english but only at very least.

英基很著重的聲明他們是用英語作為溝通語言﹐而不是教英語﹐所以他們優先選取本身是慣常用英語的小孩入讀。

他們是提供一個英語環境﹐相比主流學校﹐先前其他網友提過﹐學習氣氛興鬆D(會否過份興鬆﹐觀點與角度問題)﹐小朋友自主權大D﹐鼓勵主動學習﹐鼓勵自由創作。

所以如果小朋友和家長本身程度不太高﹐真的可能需要尋找途徑輔助小朋友﹐例如參加英語興趣班或游戲小組﹐提供機會讓小朋友多用英語表達自己﹐增強信心。說實在的﹐如果小朋友現在已很勉強去應付學校﹐若不幫他一把﹐將來唸國際小學必更辛苦。轉唸主流小學又應付不了主流學校的艱深程度。

至於普通話是新加入項目﹐乃順應潮流之作﹐不能只依賴此而學多一種語言。語言是長期日積月累浸淫得出來的﹐除返學每星期上兩堂外語﹐必須配合適當(外語)環境﹐小孩亦有紀律地平日勤加練習﹐此乃不二途徑。不然我們怎會經常投訴現今一代學生無論中英水平皆低﹐他們唸了那麼多年書﹐不要說兩文三語﹐最基本寫出來的中文也有問題﹐因為他們上課就是上課﹐下了課沒有把學到的練習練習﹐應用出來。

至於你之前問到﹐點解有錢人不入英基﹖英基接受政府資助﹐所以是國際學校中學費較廉宜的﹐深受中產歡迎。這樣一來﹐有錢人會送子女到頂尖且絕貴的學校﹐還是讓他們和中產子女一起上學﹖

Can you tell me why Tsing Yi Kind. has bigger chance to admit to ESF P1?

Also If I want to apply ESF Kind.,  As ESF has school zone.
Tsing Yi for Kowloon and N.T.
Sheung Wan for Hong Kong side.
Clearbay for Sai Kung and TKO.
which kindergarten is more easy to have the seat?

The reason for local chinese is more easy accepted by ESF's TY kinder may cause by the following reason.

1. The entrance criteria for ESF's kinder is also same as the ESF's Primary. English speaker first, foreigner second then local chinese last.
2. The ESF's Sheung Wan is most difficult to get in for local chinese. Just imagine how many "鬼佬" work in central and live in mid-level or peak. How many Korean and Japanese live in TaiKooShing. Then you can figure out how many seat is still available for the local chinese.
3. Similarly case in Sai Kung area, so many "鬼佬" there. So ESF's Abacus is also not easy for the local chinese to enter.

If the kids are not live in the English speaking family. But the parents want them goto ESF P1 successfully. To create a good English environment for them is a must. Such as hire a Philippine domestic helper. Encourage the kids watch English TV. Provide a suitable English learning softwares / games for the kids etc. Honestly, it will be quite hard for those parents speak limited of English.
I am quite agreed with "justjust" point of view.

I agree with both of your comments re how to keep the kid's English level.
Unfortunately, the parents have only very limited English not like other family. I can imagine how hard of the kid is doing. Especially the "hope" from his parents.
They only have Ind. maid who can speaks English sometime (of course not fluently as Phil. maid). So the parents have also reminded/ advised the maid to teach and talk more to the kid...that became her main duty. So can guess English is a diffculty/problem to them indeed.
