Thanks r (emoji) can seek your advice on below?
Q1.CKY offers international curriculum, but management is run by local people, who believe in such curriculum. Whereas IS's offer the same curriculum, where its management is run by westerners (regarding PYP, i fail to see the major difference between a PYP program and a normal international primary year curriculum. so i treat them the same).
so CKY shares a lot of similarities with IS's in general. kids prefer English than Chinese. there is little Chinese copy writing. maths is not so much about calculating, but understanding and thinking. kids dont learn English grammar by doing hw, but reading lots of books. grammar mistakes are taken lightly, while the content is way more important. music, when not singing, kids learn to appreciate the meanings and stories behind the music pieces, and to study the history and the writers.
however, if you look more closely at the management and teachers, CKY has a lot more local staffs in comparison to IS's. Honglish is not uncommon at the staff level. also, there's a certain academic goals kids are expected to meet. eg if parents mistakenly take CKY as an IS and neglect the importance of Chinese, the kids will suffer in the secondary level. it isn't as easy going as IS's, at the same time by far not as harsh as local schools.
a lot of misinformed parents consider CKY as just a local school with extra NETs and STEMs. some even think CKY as an IS-wannabe. although CKY sounds so much like a school between IS and LS, i think of it a class of its own. there are more than just 2 types of schools, and CKY is exactly what i said in the beginning: international curriculum, but management is run by local people.
Q2.
avoid IB cert. 98% students get A*-C in IGCSE. entry requirement of IBDP is 3B3C
Q4.
playground language is English, even at our private outside-of-school activities. my kid even mumbles in English, thinks in English. i have to enforce Cantonese speaking environment at home.
