I'm also trying to teach my son 3&5months chinese words by flash card. he likes playing with me but seems just following me saying the words and not recognize the words.
Are u using 中華字經? is it better?

I have started teaching my girls at home and there are 3 part to this. Learn by sound, sight and finally understanding.

By sound: Let the child memorize the lines, around 12 lines per day, more if the child is older than 5. Ask the child to point at the words while they are reciting.

By sight: mix up the word cards (4 - 8 words) and ask the child to arrange them in the right order.

By understanding: explain to the child the meaning of the words and ask him/her to read out the words.

This method works well with my 3 & 1/2 yrs old. As for my 6 & 1/2 yrs old, since she already knows a lot of Chinese characters, she is progressing much faster.

Prior to 中華字經, I taught my 3 1/2 daughter Chinese characters via flash cards. We would play games with the cards such as join them to pictures and making funny sentences. It was effective. With 中華字經 she seems to be learning a lot of difficult words that she doesn't need to use yet. I don't know how effective 中華字經 is as most of the vocabulary learned are not used regularly and many may be forgotten afterwards. However she seems to like to recite the 字經 so I don't mind continuing with it so long she holds an interest in it.

Hi 2monsters & CKC,

As far as I know, 中華字經 cannot be purchased from bookshops in China. You have to sigh up for the course to obtain the material. However, I know of a 字經 reader which can be purchased online from China. However I don't know how reliable they are. Actually, I spend a lot of time on the internet and find most of my info from yahoo.com.cn.

My daugther doesn't like the course.  They teach 8 words in one lesson.  So what they do is to repeat and repeat the 8 words again.  My girl said the teacher talked too loud.  It is noisy.  My hubby said the pronounciation of the teacher is no good.

吓! 成個course連教材成HK$3000幾喎! 唔係真係咁教嘛! 每堂8個字, 15堂即係120個字, 就算細D嗰班18堂都係144個字? 又話最少教350個字嘅?

I felt very disappointed about the course.  Some boys are just walking around the classroom, playing the curtain.  The teacher was talking too fast.  The class was not fun at all.

My son has tried the trial course last Saturday,  he said "it is boring.".

Dear Parents

We would like to take this opportunity to report on the progress of the classes that was held during July at KinderU.

We trust that Zijing in the format being taught in the PRC is good for children aged from 3.5 and above who can attend class without being accompanied by parents/guardians.

Our classes held for children aged from 4 -8 learnt approx. 30 words each hour per day and they learnt about 450 words over the 15 day intensive course.  The results are not as good as we hoped since HK children do not encounter Mandarin as much as children from Singapore, Malaysia and PRC.  However, we are pleased with the results.

We have encountered difficulties with parents who started their children who are underage (below 3) but we have solved the problem through integration of the Zijing materials with our Doman style of tuition.  These children learnt new words at the rate of 8 per day.  Not as much as we would like but they are under three years of age.  We consider that the teachers and children have done really well.  

We will be offering another session of 15 day courses between now and end of summer holidays.

We will be starting classes for one/two days per week and each classes will be of a duration of 90 minutes with a five minute break in between.

For parents who supports the theory of Zijing, we deeply thank you for your trust and support.  For those parents whose children did not enjoy the program, we offer them our most sincere apologies as each child is unique.  We acknowledge good comments and bad comments alike.

Thanks to parents that participated last week.  We are pleased to offer free trial classes again this Saturday to allow parents to see the results of this great program for themselves.
