I think this is an open ended question. All depends on the maturity and readiness of the kid.
My son went for year 7, at the age of 11. For the first few months, he thought of home a lot. Now, he enjoys very much the school life after the first year.
Besides, selection of a suitable school is also important. For younger students, would suggest those with bigger boarding population (over 50%) implying more school activities. Some schools are 7 days a week, that is with lot of weekend activities. This can help to minimise homesick as well as wider exposure which is something HK schools lack of. Students can develop interpersonal skills better through activities and engaging with people.
