I guess agent would only recommend those which could generate biggest benefit to himself, but not u. For reference is fine, but never rely solely on the source of agent.

Visit Education Expo which is in large scale does help. But when u get there, talk to the school representatives direct instead of the agent's staff at the same booth.

Agent charge diff schools/unis at diff rate, thus bias happens.

Retreiving info from foreign web-site like "The Student Room" is helpful too. Understand the schools/unis ranking can also clarify some misunderstanding. For sure, school fee is another important prespective to be considered.

My own experience is that firstly you could join some talks to be held by agent, then figure the rest by urself.

Though agent mostly wouldn't charge u direct, can u believe there is free lunch in this planet?

I think u misunderstood my question. I was asking about the school counsellors (I supposed from the kid's secondary school) instead of agent. Maybe I am wrong but I assumed top UK schools with high Oxbridge admission rate (over 25%) would provide good enough university admission counselling/consultation and therefore we don't need to go for agents or consultants?

我上星期六去完Amber 攪的講座, Agent話可以through佢地申請5間大學,費用$1650, 但小兒今年中五,佢叫我十月再聯絡佢地幫我攪,我問佢大學有conditional offer 的會否收留位費,佢回覆90% 不用,但朋友女兒今年中六,自己申請了兩間大學都話要收留位費,請各位指點吓,經agent 是否好D, 謝謝!

My son is studying in HK. The university counselling team in the school is a strong team and provides comprehensive advice for the whole university application process.

For example, after the students indicate their intention to apply Oxbridge (of course they need to attain certain predicted IB score), the school will assign mentor, to drill admission tests and provide mock interview. The personal statement was also reviewed several times and by different people in the school.

I had 2 formal meetings with the counsellors, the 1st one was to decide one of the IB DP subjects, based on my son's academic interest and subjects he intended to study in UK/HK universities.  The 2nd meeting was to decide the subject to be applied at Oxbridge. The counsellors welcome parents to talk to them anytime.

The rest was handled directly by my son with the counsellors. For example, deciding a good list of universities to be applied in UK/US/HK, with a good mix of safety colleges, desirable colleges and dream colleges. The counsellors will review all the US essays if the student asked them to review, giving comments on appropriateness of contents, but never edited them.

If applying universities through UCAS, there is no need to pay any deposit when the students confirm the offer.

Is that the "Firm" reply only availble on UCAS provided all the unis have send the conditional offer? I can't see this on the "View" box which is only the meeting required has been stated.

You don't have to pay any deposit. I won't suggest you to apply UCAS through Agent. There is no need for doing so, you can just apply online and pay the application fee to UCAS directly.

Very clear! Thank you so much! As my son is studying in UK now, I might not have the chance to talk to his school counsellor directly. But I trust his school provides very good counselling too

Yes, at the UCAS website, the "reply" option is only available after all the universities applied have given their offers.

Learnt from "the student room" that, if a student wants to firm the offer from the targeted university earlier, and her already selected the insurance university, but is still waiting for the results of 1 or other universities, he may "withdraw" the application from the universities whose result is not yet known. After this action, he can firm the offer at UCAS.

先選好心目中的大學及課程再登入UCAS 的網登記。都有頗多資料填。其實中學的career teacher 會在中四至中六時有些許介紹的。叫你兒女留悥吧!一般要找一位學校老師作 REFEREE 的。他會直接回應UCAS 所需要有關申請者學術的表現。所以千奇唔好對老師不敬。
