My kids went to international classes of a local kindergarten and they used PTH and English in class. My boy could only read English books on his own in K3, he did not know too many Chinese characters so it was impossible for him to read Chinese stories himself.
Then we came across some Chinese books with Pinyin. Knowing that he had learned Pinyin at school, we decided to let him try some Pinyin story books.
I still remember how happy he was when he suddenly found out that he could read Chinese books himself! But like English, the kids have to be able to communicate in PTH before they can read with Pinyin. It's a waste of time if they can only pronoune the words but are unable to understand what they have read out. |
