Going back to the different reading levels between Chinese and English, I have ...

I think Pinyin is better and easier to learn than Zhuyin.

My kids went to international classes of a local kindergarten and they used PTH and English in class. My boy could only read English books on his own in K3, he did not know too many Chinese characters so it was impossible for him to read Chinese stories himself.


Then we came across some Chinese books with Pinyin. Knowing that he had learned Pinyin at school, we decided to let him try some Pinyin story books.


I still remember how happy he was when he suddenly found out that he could read Chinese books himself! But like English, the kids have to be able to communicate in PTH before they can read with Pinyin. It's a waste of time if they can only pronoune the words but are unable to understand what they have read out.

I think these kind of books are more easily found now both in bookstores and in public libraries.  小樹苗、新雅 etc. have different titles published.

Yes, pinyin is easier to learn.  For traditional characters books, most are from Taiwan and have to use zhuyin for those

其實讀乜都好，最緊要知道自己係幫佢排緊一條點樣既路。如果諗住讀國際然後去外國升學，唔學中文都無問題。但如果無呢個安排，就要中英並重了。好多人以為中文唔駛特別用功都會識，其實上到小學就知道中文並唔簡單。

其實只要選擇一些有質素的中文書給小朋友閱讀也未嘗不可.

小女3歲，沒有特意給她中或英文書，她自己會拿書看，在香港，單一語言當然沒有雙語吃香。我會選擇適合她能力的書，太太與她伴讀中文，我負責另一面。我不太憂心她將來，亦憂心不來，既來之，則安之。
