Frankly, I don't like this kind of conversation. I will bring her 'travel around the garden'. In fact, I also will not ask the parents or their kids this and that. For me, I just need my daughter to study, be responsible, focus and careful in doing whatever she's assigned to do, I don't really mind her marks are lower than others. In fact, as long as a person work hard, I don't think he / she will not be doing good on his / her study.
BTW, every school can have good students. Even good and famous schools also have academically-not-doing well students. But again, studying is part of your life. Studying good or not is not the most important factor leading to success.
Another criteria I don't buy is even you come first in your level but you don't have a good character, I won't regard him / her as excellent.
Recently, I encountered a very good student. Though he's not good in English, he's willing to learn. I spent almost an hour teaching him when I was waiting for my daughter. His attitude was really good. I think he will stand out one day.
I see a lot of cases with the top students from famous universites of the world, but their attitude...Eventually, they lost their jobs as they could not cope with others well.
