“all students” – once the exam is restructured to become more difficult, on average, all students would need to spend relatively more time and effort on Chinese.
Under the old system, students, esp. those from the Science stream, were only required to get a “pass” on HKCEE Chinese so as to get into the preparatory level, provided that they did well on other subjects.
But now, they have to get a “pass” on DSE Chinese, which is known to be much more difficult and is not graded on a curve.
Many students who would have been able to get into universities are therefore denied admissions.
The result is that students who are technically strong cannot get a seat, just because of the poor grade on Chinese (which could be rarely used in their fields), while others who are less competent can get in. We all want our students, esp the university graduates, to have good proficiency in languages.
But should we put such a high emphasis on Chinese? If we take into consideration the current global competition, I would vote for 4222 – English 4, Others 2.
But this is totally politically incorrect, and in reality, we all know what is going on.
So, we shall just live with it and move on. |
