Yeah there are many methods depending on each child's circumstances. I respect that and I do not normally have comments on individual child's methods. But in general, we should be able to observe and reason some useful guidelines.
May be I am old school. I think to learn words, we should learn from books, not from subtitles. To learn listening, we should learn from conversations or from TV programs, not from audio books. To learn to read, we should learn from reading proper books, not from reading subtitles. The danger with subtitles is that the children will grow to depend on them, which is detrimental to listening. The trick is like learning to read, starting small and simple with simple dialogues without subtitles.
Of course if the children is in the transition to more capable English users, using subtitles to help understanding and generate interests is a good way.
