Yeah there are many methods depending on each child's circumstances.  I respect that and I do not normally have comments on individual child's methods. But in general, we should be able to observe and reason some useful guidelines.  

May be I am old school. I think to learn words, we should learn from books, not from subtitles. To learn listening, we should learn from conversations or from TV programs, not from audio books. To learn to read, we should learn from reading proper books, not from reading subtitles.  The danger with subtitles is that the children will grow to depend on them, which is detrimental to listening. The trick is like learning to read, starting small and simple with simple dialogues without subtitles.

Of course if the children is in the transition  to more capable English users, using subtitles to help understanding and generate interests is a good way.

其實樓主的題目好闊，英文程度包括聽說讀寫。大家都同意多閱讀是基本的方法，但怎樣鼓勵孩子多閱讀就真是考腦筋了。好難三言兩語就講盡，的確有些方法不能一直用到底，我自己就隨着孩子的情況而不斷調適。

I think questions asked in EK very often have this problem. The questions are million dollar questions with no specifics.

The discussion will be much more useful If the thread owner tell us how old is the child, what is the current level if English an the expected level if English. Is the focus on passing exams or be a capable user f English in all aspects.

If the person who ask the question do not spend time to write the question well, nothing good is going to come.

讓我在這裏稍稍離題，問一個有關改善英文的問題。
我囝囝在海外讀小四，英文閱讀（reading and comprehension）剛達到6年級（合格水平），但老師只給他B, 因為他讀故事書時沒有留意標點符號，總在不恰當的地方停頓，讀起來沒有句式。而且評分要求學生能以不同聲音去表達不同角色的對話，和表達不同的情感（expressive). 另一個問題是故事寫作，他有很多很好的ideas, 但寫出來却沒有structure, 東寫寫，西寫寫。老師說讀起來就只覺得他想到甚麼就寫甚麼，但沒有連貫性。他寫議論文可以被老師說好，寫故事就只得C（僅僅合格）。

我囝囝很喜歡看non fiction，但就抗拒看故事類，說沒興趣。你們會用甚麼方法幫這類孩子改善英文呢？

好多謝大家給那麼多意見。小朋友二年級，自小至現在一直看很多英文書。但差不多可說是不看中文書。自從升上中文小學後佢中文越來越好。以讀寫能力看中文應該已超越英文。所以我懷疑只看書在學習第二語言是否足夠。

假設一個香港人，會考中文D，而英文A。以他中英文的聽讀講寫能力來比較，可能差不多。所以學好第二語言真的不容易。
想請教那些自己或是有高中兒女曾在中小英中就讀，不曾到外國居住, 而英文在聽讀講寫都很好的。究竟是怎樣學好英文這第二語言的？

大概每星期看二十多本。故事性的看了不少如rainbow magic, magic tree house, ORT 已全看完，知識性的看得很雜。magic tree house 及G. Stilton正在看。

看了書多久，我已忘記。二十多本有些是薄的。自從升上小一後，她便嫌guided reading 太慢。因她看英文書很快，中文便慢些。練習便沒做。請問讀寫練習是指什麽？

看書最痛苦莫過於做讀書報告。如果夾硬要讀完每本書都要寫一些東西，對有些沒興趣的孩子是一個打擊。結果可能是什麼書都不看， 不看就不用做。

由細到大我都很喜歡看書，但每逢要做讀書報告時必定會選一本薄的書，在末段裡找些句子，抄下來改一改就是一份功課了。諷刺的是今天我都會用“這是為你好”的理由要求孩子看完書後最好寫一些關於書的東西，順便學習一些生字或句子。
