而程度上, cky的學生與其他本地的官津學生比較, 會不會有很大的距離 ? 特別是在中英數上, 將來會不會很難轉回譜通學校呢 ?

請指教 !

我擔心的問題和你一樣, 始終 CKY 的學費不便宜, 學費+校車+午膳+雜費 也要5,6千之譜, 萬一再來一次什麼 "衝擊", 需讀免費學校之時, 會不會有問題?
問過一家長--- 英文不用擔心, 中文也 OK, 數學方面他自己另做加強. 據他所言, 我覺得 CKY 像一間 Local 化的國際學校.
可有 CKY 家長再提供多一點意見. Thanks.

Hi plkckykid,

I am glad to receive a lot of info. from you on PLKCKY.  Could I know more on the following:
(1)  The school probably will be re-built start from this year.  I learn from the introductionary seminar that it will be in two phase.  Have the Principle explain to the parents about the measures to reduce the dust & the noise and the safety of the students as there will be many trunks go in and out of the school campus.  Will there be another option e.g. borrow another school campus as temporary campus.

(2)  Another clue on the secondary school syllabus? Will IB be adopted?

(3)  It seems that the English speaking environment will be deminished in higher class.  Do you do the proportional of subjects taught in English and Chinese in P.4 & P.5?

(4)  No doubt the English standard of CKY students is good, how about the standard of Putunghau?

(5)  Are the teachers of CKY nice and kind to the students?

Sorry that there are so many questions.  My kid has been accepted as 2005 P.1.  I am struggling CKY with GT.  Any parents know GT or more about CKY?  Please advise.  Thanks

You have posed a very difficult question for me to answer.  I have thought it over in the past two days and I share your feeling as a working parent who has to earn bread and milk for the kid and to care so much about kid’s education.  Yes, studying in CKY, there is no need for you to spend a lot of time in preparing for the dictation, test and examination day after day and to take away the joy and laughing from both of you and your kid.  You can have the time to share the good old things in life with your kid.

However, having said that it doesn’t mean that life will be easier for you if you care so much with the education of your kid cos no school is magic by itself.  The magic lies among you, your kid and the school.  In fact, the school is only a catalyst or a facilitator to your kid’s lifelong education.  It cannot work without your proactive participation.

Take an example.  In P.3, my kid learnt about universe, the solar system, space traveling and the possibility of E.T. in the first term and the emerging and extinction of dinosaur in the second term as the major themes in English.  If your kid has developed a good reading habit, he can read the lots of books himself.  Still, you have to listen to his reading and comment on his reading.  

Also, your kid has to choose a topic for his project, say one of the planets and to work on it with the help of reference books and information from the internet.  You might have to go to the public libraries or bookshops with him.  You might have to spend hours with him in front of the computer and to search for the key word for the planet your kid chose.  In fact, you are growing in the world of knowledge with your kid.  

If you are fascinated with the lots of interesting knowledge of the universe, you might find that there are lots of interesting websites like http://kids.msfc.nasa.gov/ or http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forkids/home/index.html
You know that there is a big, big world of knowledge outside besides the reading books assigned by the school and you might want to share your ‘big discovery’ with him.  In this way, you are opening a door of knowledge to your kid.  

In preparing for the project, you might have to keep an eye on his writing and his artwork, be it 2-D or 3-D and you have to rehearse with him for the presentation in front of the class, in English of course.  One other thing, he might have to prepare some Q&As as his classmates used to ask him after his presentation.

Apart from the reading and the project, you might have to consider if it is the right time to teach him about the relationship between the universe and man.  Where is the niche of man and the crisis that we face everyday.  The feeling gets even stronger in preparing the materials on dinosaur that might arouse the interest of the kid for the second term this year.

In order to arouse his interest on the subject, I watched with my kid ‘The Lost World’ and ‘The Jurassic Park’.  I even bought the comic book ‘侏羅紀大冒險’ for my kid and he enjoyed the films and the book so much and he would like to know more about dinosaur.  Then we read some interesting books like ‘The Death of the Dinosaurs’, which is a very interesting book with good and simple written English but at the same time presenting the major theories of the day.  This will definitely enrich his imagination about the unknown but this will also consume a lot of energy from you if you think this is worthwhile for you to do so.  

You may even take a step further to explore with him about philosophy, about dinosaurs having dominating the earth for more than 185 million years but suddenly extinct some 65 million years ago while we human being can only have the first human as early as some 4.5 million years ago.  Today men are ruling the world (?) but who knows we might be the next victim of extinction.  Remember the tsunami in SE Asia that civilization can be destroyed all of a sudden.  You can have a lot of topics to talk to with your kid.  In whatsoever way, you have an undeniable obligation to your kid’s education even though you are very tired after work.

Looking at the textbook list of P.4, I am so eager to learn with my kid the theme of natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and such.  

Hoping that this can help you to have a better idea of the challenge and the risk of studying in the non-traditional school.

After reading how you help your kid, I think that you have contributed the most to help the kid exploring a lot.  For the school, they provide the tools and guidelines, such as giving a project and asking for presentation.  So it really depends on the kid's self-motivation and parents' involvement.  This is the approach of international schools and DSS today.

Have you compared CKY with GT,Logos and international schools before?  Just wonder how you think all these schools differ in their education?

This is an excellent piece of passage to share.

CYK's kind of school is to be able to provide a happy learning environment to the kids.  When our kids feel the joy of learning, love learning in school and have fun during the study, they will more eager to explore new stuffs.

And I believed the guiding approach that you are using can also be applied to the kids studying in traditional school, provided that the parents understand what is the most important for the kids’all-round development and knowing how to balance the homework, examination and their time.

May I say once a student has been studying in CKY P.1, then he has to study 12 yrs onwards till he has completed the secondary school in CKY.  

He or she  cannot go back to the traditional govt secondary schools to study F.1 , because no school examination marks of P.5 and P.6 would be submitted to the Govt education dept.
Am I right?

I’ll try to answer you to the best of my knowledge.

(1)         I understand that the option of borrowing another school campus as temporary campus has been ruled out.  This is because a lot of parents would prefer to have their kids staying in the present lovely and serenely beautiful school premises.  For renovation details, I think you can talk with Mr. Yeung.  For me, I have the confidence that the dust and noise generated from the work and the safety of kids will be well taken care of.  A good example is the recent field trip for all P.3 students to Guangzhou Panyu Xiangjiang Safari Park (番禺香江野生動物園) which was a big success. I was committed at work that day and could not join the trip but my restless kid could enjoy a fabulous day trip under the close attention of the schoolteachers and the parent helpers.

(2)         The Principal has promised that the secondary school syllabus will cater for the specific needs of parents no matter their kids will be sent studying aboard or will study in local universities.

(3)         There is no P.5 at the moment, not until the new school term for 2005-2006.  Instead of viewing that the English-speaking environment will diminish in the higher class, we must agree that the English communication skills in the lower class should be strengthened.  Starting from the very beginning, CKY stressed that she was a bilingual school with so much emphasis in English and Putonghua teaching.  Apart from international school, there are only a handful of schools where kids can have native speakers teaching in most of the subjects in both English and Putonghua.  Through their contact with various teachers, kids learn how to listen to different accents.  Instead of learning words by dictation, kids learn spelling by pronunciation.  Also, kids not only learn how to sing English songs, they also learn how to use their body language to sing.

(4) Students can have no problem in communicating very smoothly in Putonghau to each other.  They have built up a reservoir of Chinese words and phrases.  This has an effect on their writing and my kid can write good Chinese instead of Cantonese.

(5) Teachers and the principals of CKY are nice and kind to students.  My kid is very willing to talk to them during recess.  Class teachers will dine with kids every day and the principal will have lunch with a group of four students from time to time.  In fact, the strength of CKY lies on the genuine concern on the needs and the development of students.

My girl is studying in P.2 this year and last year she studied P.1. in a subsidized school.  As far as I know, there were about 100 pupils applying for P.2 and my girl was one of them and about 10 among the 100 pupils were admitted to P. 2 this year.

I think my daughter progress a lot in language.  She can now use PTH to read aloud any story book she is given without the need to read once to her first.  She can communicate in PTH with me.  In English, the theme in the first term are Season and The Sea.  Besides knowing more vocabularies in these 2 themes, she can write short paragraphs to describe each season.  She is also more bold to speak in English.

My daughter also enjoys school life.  she is eager to take something special from home to school to show her class teachers or prepare some IQ questions for her Chinese teacher and she has to ask them in PTH. From participating in some school activities, I find that students love their teachers who are loving and caring and they always hold the teachers hands.
