I have the same definition on "mother tongue". My mother tongue is English, so rightfully my boy's first language should also be English. However the other family members including my husband are speaking to him in Cantonese. So I am uncertain whether English or Cantonese should be my boy's mother tongue now. It's probably Cantonese coz his exposure to Cantonese is much more than English at this moment, and his caretakers (my inlaws) are speaking to him in Cantonese. Hence I am quite determined to put him in good English school, in order to reinforce his English. I am so worried about his exposure to Chinese since we are not a pure English environment at home. |
