Probably, the Chinese standard of your kid isn't really bad.  Just his sense on English is a lot better than Chinese.  My son is the other way round.  He is 3 and can now read level 3 of the "500-Series" book.  As to English, he can communicate in English (at least no problem playing Brain Quest).  But he doesn't seem to have any concept on spelling and phonics.  When he see the shape hexagon, he knows it's hexagon.  But I don't think he is able to recognize the word "hexagon" or know how to spell it.
