Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Dear RichardMa

I am not sure the strategy for girls... Well, you have Sacred Heart to interview, have you apply for St Paul Kinder in Causeway Bay, these two are the dreams for most parents with girls, otherwise, get into a famous one and apply the St' Stephen Girl Kinder when she ready for K2. That's what most parent would do as well..

Re St. Paul Church and Rhenish, both are famous, but St. Paul Church are more famous in a wider spectrum, strong in academic wise, Rhenish need to improve its English in a sense,  depends on where you live as well, if I were you, bring her to both school location and ask her which one she like most may be you can take it from there....

anyway, good luck and god bless in Scared Heart.

cheers

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Dear Ethaniel,

Long time no talk and hope this message find you well.  Sounds like you're settled down with SKH ..

Will be moving to HK island next month and is planning nursey class for Travis. Contacted Victoria (Belcher) and doesn't look promising that he will get a seat there. Visited Wisely which is a nice school but ,if possible, would like to keep him in a better English speaking environment for the next couple of months. Any idea of a good "international" schools which offer pre-school in or near Central/mid level areas ?

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Hello Travis Mom

If you want a more English Environment nursery for your baby, there is one next to Wisely call the Woodland Montessori School, cost something similar to Victoria, they have quite a range of different classes and most of the teachers are English.

Also bear in mind about where about in Central that you will be living and how to travel to the nursey, it is best kept a short distance. There aren't many choices re nursery on Caine Rd, another one would be Cannan next to Wellcome.

Hoep these info help and good luck in finding a sutiable one for your kid.

cheers Ethaniel

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Dear Ethaniel,

Thanks for the information. Indeed, we will be living near Caine/Boham Rd intersection and are about 5 mins walk from Woodland.

Contacted the school and was told that only pm (12:00 noon - 3:00 pm)has place left.

Still considering as fee is quite expensive.  Perhaps you can help me out in this situation as i always found you helpful. The followings are some facts/observations:-

1) Travis primarily speaks English day-to-day and can speak in full sentences quite well now
2) He has attended international school for 2 months in Aug and Sept 2004 and I found that it helps a lot in terms of his accent and vocabulary power
3) most likely, he will be going to SKH next year for K1
4) If needed, I can send him to Canada for summer school when he gets older
5) We are average family but both my husband and I am willing to spend on Travis education. Our experience tell us that fluency in English (and Manadrin) is very important for future schooling and career no matter where Travis will end up be.

Do you think keep him in a better English environment in the next few months will make a big difference in his English competency? Or he’ll lose it all/mostly anyway when he starts kindergarten in SKH ?

Cheers,
Travis Mom

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Hi BabyYuiYui and ethaniel,

I think my daughter is of similar age to your son and daughter.  May I share some opinions with you.  My daughter is now studying in Victoria Pre-nursery (Harbour Heights) and was got acceptance to SKH in K1 2005.  Most probably, she will go to SHK next year but she will get an interview in Scared Heart next week.  But I think the chance for getting acceptance to Scared Heart is quite slim because she is not a Catholic and she cannot speak well in Cantonese (as I know the interview will be conducted in Cantonese).

Ethaniel - may I know why you choose SKH for your son?  In fact, I am impressed by its campus (having an open playground which is good for daughter who is very active) and being not far away from our home.  My friend also recommended SKH for me as her son and daughter were graduated there.

BabyYuiYui,

My daughter studied in the playgroup in Woodland for about half an year when she was 1.5 yr to 2 yr old.  The playgroup there is good and the teachers are nice.  Some (1 or 2) teachers are Chinese but they speak very good English and they were not allowed to speak Chinese to the children and parents in the school.  My daughter enjoyed very much and learnt Eng much there and she now still remember the songs that she learnt in Woodland.  When she was 2 yr old, she shifted to Victoria because Victoria is bilingual (Eng/Cantonese).  But Victoria is quite commercial and the environment is a bit crowded and has no open playground.  For about 4 months in Victoria, she can now speak quite well in Eng and has improvement in Spoken Cantonese.  Woodland also has pre-nursery class (either Eng or Eng and Mandarian) but cost about $5,500 per month which is quite expensive.  However, I plan to let my son (now 8 months old) to join the playgroup in Woodland when he reaches 1.5 yr old.

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Dear yslysl,

Is your daugher going to be in SKH am or pm class ?

Also, do you know any place in mid-level offering good English tutoring for kids. If you're interested, we can jointly hire private tutor.
What classes are you planning to send your daughter to off school as i need to do all planning for Travis soon.

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Hi ethaniel,

I didn't apply for St Paul cos the chance is slim and quite far away fm our home. I lived in Sai Ying Pun area.

Thanks, I do hope my little girl could be accepted by Sacred Heart am school. This coming Sat 08Jan she will attend the interview but it's quite early in the morning 9:00am. By previous experience, she may not warm up yet if too early, God Bless she will be this sat la.

Most likely I would take Rhenish than St Paul Church as Rhenish is very close to my house about 7 - 10mins walk. But the English standard and the renovation issue is one of my concerns here. Will see the result of Sacred Heart first. thanks

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Very glad to see this topic and thank all for your valuable sharing.

I'm so lost in looking for kinder for my boy Anson.  He should be a 06 student (being 大仔) and I'm interested in SKH and St. Paul Church (鐡崗) due to their location and their reputation.  But I just wonder do you send your BB to pre-nursery nearby? and any recommendation?

Anson is now attending 2 playgroups a week.  Previously, I didn't plan to let him attend pre-nursery, but people around me keep urging me to find pre-nursery for him and considering that it would be a good for preparing K1, then I started to look for n1 for Anson.   But I've no idea and feel so lost.

Would any one of you could give your precious comments and let me out from the dark   !

Million thanks   !

P.S.  Richardma,  how's your daughter's interview in 聖心?  Hope everything is smooth!  Good luck   !

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Hi Ansonbaby,

My daugther had attended 5 inteviews so far and the last one is Sacred Heart. Among the 5, Sacred Heart is the 'best' one she performed although there are few questions she was not able to answer.

She was very obedience on that day and hope she could be accepted at Sacred Heart Canossian. God Bless.  She loves this school and enjoy played inside.
Keep finger crossed.

thanks

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Dear Everyone

sorry haven't been up here for a long while coz i had my study homework to do first....

Baby Yui Yui
I am not sure if my opinion worth anything, if you are 100% you are going to send Travis to SKH next year for k1, it is a chinese language dominant environment, I think it is not necessary to send him to any expensive pre-school. Language is something you have to use and speak all the time in order to make good use of it. Between now and SKH, I would suggest if you choose a nice relax one for him and take extra course in PM session for English playgroup or something, Letterland in Causeway Bay is a nice one, if you are so concern about his english standard.

I myself came back from England as I have been there most of my life. I am not too keen on forcing my child to be in eng environment, in fact, he doesn't speak much of eng yet, not even a-z, but i want him to pick up well in him mothermogue Cantonese first, when he is felling comfortable in conversing using cantonese(he is 2.5 yr old), then I will start talking the UK English to him, he does understand when I talk to the helper most of the time. But in school, he is always speaking and learning everything in Chinese. So, this is my own little view. But, then again, if you are willing to invest on him, start when he is in K1, SKH and extra eng/phonic to do or something..

One thing is funny, I saw quite a lot 2 year olds being forced to be in eng environment, then go to a chinese pre-nursery and they end up being very quite for a long time, coz they have to work out the transition from eng to cantonese and it would prohibit them to speak freely on either language. I like my son to son, in anything, this is the confidence build up period and I don;t want to stop this even when he is saying anyhting not making sense at all...

hope this help to your Travis...
cheers
Ethaniel

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Hi co128

I have the same query as you. same situation. but I have one more to wait is Sacred Heart Canossian.

I have the same feeling of others that 'Ling Yan' definiately NO GOOD fm my point of view as I called them several times enquire about nursery no one return call and at the school they behaved not good to me as they asked me whether I will attend their K1 if want to study N1. I said not decide yet so they are not happy with this.

Re: 中西區選校: 俾D意見啦

Dear yslysl

The reason I chose SKH is based on:-
traditional it is very famous
my son love it with big Tittle Tykes cars
big campus
phonics starting from K2

I had to choose from St.Paul, Rhenish and Kau Yan and, St.Paul Church is good too, If I hadn't had the SKH to choose, I would have chosen St Paul Church. Rhenish because of the building site and inside the church it looks very choatic the day we attended the interview. Kau yan is good with resourceful facilities but most of their k3 will stay at Kau Yan which I want my son to go to Government school intead.
That's why I have chosen SKH.

Even though if my son will not be so lucky for Government allocation to Primary, at least his kindergarten from SKH would be quite good when you need to go and apply for non-government school, if you know what i mean.

cheers
ethaniel
