Re: LCP Solution for ADD and Speech Delay kid
http://neuro-mancer.mgh.harvard.edu/ubb/Forum7/HTML/002726.html:
Dr. Stoll in his book The Omege-3 Connection mentions his thoughts.
They are that once DHA is provided it
remains in the cells for a length of time.
EPA however, is mobile, and needs more
supplementation. This is yet a theory, but
gives some idea as to which product to use
and for how long. So far the research is
showing that it is possible that EFAs are
strengthening the blood brain barrier, by
making the membranes more intact, and
also possibly increasing flexibility in the 3 dimensional
workings or receptors sites for neurotransmitters. Poor EFA status is thought
to make membranes stiff and limiting
receptor access. In the next few years we
will probably see more on this theory.
I have also found new papers that suggest
EFAs are important for gene expression in
the cells.
EFA chemistry is very complex. Don't be daunted by it. Many physicans don't understand it! The chemical names for the
various essential fatty acids are long and
almost unpronouncable! That is why we use
abbreviations for them.
EFA== essential fatty acids, a general term
for all of them.
EPA== eicosapentaenoic acid (omega-3)
DHA== docosahexaenoic acid (omega-3)
ALA== alpha linolenic acid (omega-3)
GLA== gamma linolenic acid (omega-6)
LA== linoleic acid (omega-6)
There are many more fatty acids in the body.
The chemistry here is immense.
Safety issues: I suggest you keep your oils
in the refrigerator. Also fish oil products
should be a light color, not brownish. Make sure they are used within the expiration date.
Some manufacturers put them in a dark capsule
to protect them from light. I would cut open
any dark product and squeeze out the oil.
If it is light, it is safe. If brownish I would not use it. All oils are subject to
rancidity and heat/light can change them
quickly. When spoiled they give off damaging
free radicals which can harm tissues.
Some products come with vit E in them to
help with this issue. And taking a good
multivit with E or E separately is a good
insurance against free radical effects.
All fats, all, share this free radical
damage. Inhaling fumes from frying can
be dangerous too. EFAs simply share this
trait with all other fats.
