Cat. 1 meaning those non-cantonese families, meaning that there is no way their kids can study in a local school because the parents 'don't know cantonese'.  In your case and to be honest, in most local families in Hong Kong, they have at least one or both parent who can speak cantonese but they 'chose' not to teach their kids.  Therefore, these families are actually under Cat. 2.

OK, maybe one or 2 Cat. 2 in CWBS G1 this year and you being a Cat. 2 parent gave up the placement.  I think we are only trying to advise the new applicant that the chance is LOW and they should make alternative choices.

I think we should notice all parent whom want to apply ESF........ONLY put the answer "English" in all question about language!!! Even you are borned in HK and mother tongue is "Cantonese", "HONEST" is not necessary for the applicaton.....
Because one of my friend also made the same mistake.....since they are moved to Aust more than 25 YEARS with english speaking only and they only speak Cantonese before 10-year-old.....

I am sorry but I don't agree with your point of view.  First of all, I don't agree that one should lie, because if everybody lie, I really do believe that ESF will do some assessment before taking the students.  Just like the current Year 1 interview, I know a girl whose parent lie and after the interview, she was disqualified.

There are some ESF primary school which takes a fair amount of Cat. 2 student, e.g. SJS, KJS.  If you really target ESF primary, you can consider moving to another catchment to suit your purpose but lying is definitely not the right way to go about it and for sure, not setting a good example for your kid.  Of course, there are parents that lie and they might have to suffer the consequence as a result.

they said they will test your kids know cantonese or not in the interview

Agree!  Able to speak Cantonese doesn't mean the chance to get in ESF kinder is slim, in fact the percentage of local kids is quite high in TY and WKS (not sure other campus).  And the chinese teacher or EA can also test kids can speak Cantonese or not, so lying on the application form is not really safe since they have "informal play day" now.

For Y1 interview, I also heard that they do test those local kids who claim do not speak Cantonese.

我唔係指小朋友識中文都要話自己唔識呀~~我係指如果小朋友只識講同聽英文而完全唔識中文的,父母就唔好話自己"first language"係"cantonese"!!因為會被分去cat. 2的~~
我仔仔宜家好麻煩,其他國際學校有d就話佢年尾出世(10月頭)又話佢細唔肯收,比佢留一年做大仔又話佢太大(完全佢講晒)....ok
我去報local school....又話佢點解完全唔識中文....咁樣唔ok.....但我唔明點解其他國藉的小朋友唔識中文又無問題.....
ESF.....父母mother tongue係cantonese又唔可以...
我都好想教仔仔中文,但一開始佢就學英文,朋友仔又係外國小朋友(佢得一個朋友係中國人,但都係英文人)....一星期可能只有一天見到婆婆會聽到cantonese.....本身佢語言能力比較慢2歲都仲講唔出自己個名(我小時候都要3歲先識講野).....言語治療師又叫我唔好o係呢個時候教佢兩種語言,因為會令佢混淆,講說話能力只會更加慢....
我除o左本地學校同國際學校...我真係唔知仲有d咩可以選擇....好無奈~

there is no crime in being able to speak Cantonese.  It is just that for parents planning to send their children to Abacus and CWBS, there are truly very very few Cat 2 students there.

Mind you... I heard some parents at the playdate (the trial class after parents have accept the offer)... and I was suprised! totally... cuz we are at Abacus.

not yet known.  I have called them and asked.  They told me the result will be out in the end of December.  But i think the chance to getting in ESF is very little, as we don't hold any passport except HKSAR.

Don't care about it!! Since my son is holding US passport and English speaking only.....But I put "my" first language as cantonese..... So...There is no chance for my son also~~ I will apply woodland and Tutor Time for him as the back-up~~

that means Abacus already had sorted out the no. of cat 1 and cat 2 applicants.
