根德園，st catherine ,兩間都收，唔知讀邊間！

Dear LungWai,

Just for sharing. My son is very shy. He doesn't like to play with other children. Quite quiet compare  with other children. However, he has some strenghs. He is nearly two years old. He can speak quite well in English and Cantonese. His memory is very good. He has a very good preformance in play group. If you were me, which school would you choose? The traditional kinder. or st. catherine? Some people think that shy children should put into traditional school. But some think that they should put into activity school, so that they have chance to change the character. They can get more confidence and more presentable. What do you think?

有人話根德園適合男仔因為數學深d, St catherine適合女仔因為英文強d.  又或者反過來說, 男仔數學精d, 不如早d train up 佢o地 d 英文, 而女仔語言強, 不如 train up 下 佢o地 d 數.

不過兩間都係K2 返下午的.

Agreed with LungWai both schools have strengthens and weakness.   It depends on what’s your own idea on education.  I have the same problem three years ago and I pickup Kentville for my son.  He’s very happy these three years and I decided to put my daughter in Kentville this September.   I know some SC kids and they are very happy as well.  Same as SC, Kentville has a lot of kids go to DBS, La Salle, DPS, MC, SM, etc.  Actually both school are quite commercial to have 600kids at K1.

My kid will study K1 at Kentville in coming Sep but I am afraid that the school is too tough as he is a shy boy.    You son was happy to study in Kentville, can you explain more details ? As far as I know, Kentville has no other activities; parent do not know what their children doing in school because the school seldom has notices to parent.  Does this teaching style too tough for a small kid ?

Frist, you can communicate with the teacher by phone or handbook everyday.

Second, the school will give you the syllabus at the end of the week.    While I read the first two words of the English poem,  my son remembers all the others.

The syllabus is quite difficult but I seldom do revision with my son and he got around 95 to 100 for all dictation and examination.    (all 100 marks in K1 and some 98 at K2 and some 95 in K3 due to careless mistake.    I talked with the other mothers, they have same comments.  They have four kids accept by DBS & two waiting list in my son's class.  I don't know the others.

Third, they have a lot of activities such as basketball, English drama, …. …
but never involved parents even the graduation ceremony.   

Sometimes my son told me that he was selected for these activities, that activities.    Sometime I can see there are some photos in the school board.  

Actually the English standard of the school is very good.  
In K1, same as the other kindergarten, they will teach A to Z and the associated vocabularies (around 3-4 each).    You need to draw pictures for all these vocabularies and also learn some other relate words such as ‘a bottle of milk’ ‘a cup of water’
Simple grammar will be introduced such as add ‘S’ to the verb for he / she / it.  
No phonic at all but the pronunciation are very good. (字正腔圓)    Some of my friends (native speaking person) said that the English pronunciation of my son is very good.  

我鐘意:
1. 小朋友確係比返學前自覺好多, 如食飯, 除鞋, 做工課等等.
2. 課程好像比其他幼稚園深(見試卷), 感覺好似學識好多0野.
3. 唔講俾家長知幾時考試, 要小朋友自己溫習, 令小朋友從小就不依賴父母同佢溫習, 而家長亦樂得清閒.

我唔鐘意:  無課外活動 and  好小家長會

Highly recommend Kentville !

My son studied there 3 years and he will be a P.2 student on sep.He and I like this school very much.We don't feel it is too tough.Their english level is high even they don't have foreigner to teach english.Teachers are very nice.
If you don't want your child feel hard when he change to primary school life, you must take this school for choice.One of my relative whose daugher studied in Kentivlle and son studied in SC . She also felt Kentville is better than SC . SC's school fee is expensive than Kentville It is not worth paying SC for high school fee.This opinion was heard from SC's parents.

In my point of view, it is difficult to say that whether it is worth to pay the high school fee for SC or not.
No doubt to say that SC and Kentville are good kindergardens.
It just depends on which teaching approach you appreciate and which teaching approach suitable for the kids' character.

除了teaching approach, 我都想compare下兩間kinder既透明度, ie.先生"主動"同家長既溝通多唔多?另外,如小朋友某方面有問題,會用甚麼態度去處理?eg.叫家長自己諗掂or熱心幫忙or suggest a solution.....?

我都會揀根德園...
原因好簡單, 因為我個女都係讀根德園囉, 都無試過其他, 唔知其他好唔好架嘛.  
我鐘意:
無家長參與既野, 因為我懶.
佢地自我學習能力好高, 就算放假都會自己做功課, 溫習..好似洗哂腦咁, 仲要係好開心個種.
雖然無其他學校個d旅行, 參觀個d活動, 但係每兩個月都會開party, 有運動會, 有表演(當然學校唔會話過你知, 係要個小朋友自己講,你先會知)

透明度唔高, 老師唔會主動搵你(我怕搵得你都未必係好野), 但係你打得去搵老師, so far我個女既老師都會好詳細咁解答我問題.  K1既老師連我個女每日小食盒(日日唔同o咼)食過咩都記得, 話比我知佢鐘意食咩, 唔鐘意食咩.  我驚我個女係讀寫困難(久唔久將d字反轉哂黎寫), 佢又解釋比我聽咩係讀寫困難.  到升K2既時侯佢又話我知佢幫佢地做過輔導, 因為怕佢地唔想升上K2.  到K2開始多寫字既時侯, 我個女因為唔慣K2下晝班, 成日8點就話要訓覺, 功課都唔做, 我同老師講.  第2日個女番黎就話佢地要9點先可以訓覺, 因為老師想佢地做左功課先.  我問佢係咪同佢一個講, 佢話唔係係全班.
不過佢地有d老師個樣真係好cool.

Thanks for your advice.  I agree with you that Kentville can train up the children to be more independent and self-disscipline (I heard from other friends too).   Your children is so brillant !! Did he take any courses (e.g. English) outside the school ?  Or do your family speak in English with him ?  Indeed, the kid is my nephew and he stay with me for 6 days per every week.   His parent is busy at work and have no idea how to teach him.   So, I think that Kentville may be good for my nephew as parental involvment is not required.    Right ?

As I know, some famous kindergarten will require that the child can speak.  As my son until now cannot speak, I will bring him to the doctor.  I hope that he can speak in this short period before interview.

Dear PYJENNYHO,

Concerning the use of English during the interview with Kentville teachers,  I could share my personal experience with you.
Teachers in Kentville can speak English quite well .  In my case, I requested the use of English on the day of interview as my son had not been using Cantonese at all before the interview day. The teachers asked me why and then they started using pretty good English eventhough they did ask all questions once in Cantonese first.

昨天已做了決定，我們都是決定讓囡囡讀根德園。因為我們都好想小朋友可以學到自律和紀律。同埋上小學時唔會太辛苦。加上佢係大女，會比較容易pick up的功課，唔會怕寫字，事關囡囡已經識寫自己的名(英文)，仲好鍾意用筆寫字。希望會選擇正確。
