May I be advised of the difference between Oxford Reading Tree and Oxford Story Tree?  My girl starts reading Stage One of ORT, which is about the story of Kipper, right?

Oxford reading tree has published CD Rom and sold at $280. Think it is another good choice in comparison with the books.

In the CD-Rom, there are 10 stories (from 10 books of main stream only) with the pronounciation and other activities and tests. I think buying CD Rom is more bargain.

You know buying 2 packs of books (10 books in total) cost almost  $5XX....

I have been thinking about to buy both Oxford Reading Tree and Oxford Story Tree.  However, it's really expensive, especially the former.  My son is three years old and I have checked that he can read stage 1 (5 sets).  If I buy all of them, it costs around $800.  Oxford Story Tree seems more 'value for money' because it also has CD Rom and exercise books.  

Oxford Reading Tree can be borrowed from Public Libraries.  Just check call number JJ HUN.  Many public libraries have the books but they are really hot.

I eventually bought 4 sets of Stage 1 (except Kipper) and Red Series of Oxford Story Tree in Cosmos Bookshop.  I did not buy Kipper set becuase four of them are the same as the Red Series.

I've cross checked ORT's web site and 青田's site. The pictures shown are different. I'm still confused which stage and which series I should buy. I would like to have a look first before ordering.

Yesterday, I went to Commercial press and found Oxford Study Tree, 186 one pack, including 6 books, CD and worksheet. I found it's good but for age 5+. My bb is around 2 only.

Any place I can see ORT stage 1 or 2? I searched the library catalogue and can only find stage 3. Are stage 1 & 2 available at library too?

I visited greensfield's counter in Books Fair and found that the books sold should be the same as Oxford Reading Tree.

You may try Stage 1 first.  There are three sets for Stage 1, Kipper Stories, Biff and Chip Stories and First Words.  The first two sets do not have words and the third set has two to three words in a page.

The set you found in Commercial Press should be Oxford Story Tree.  I have compared Oxford Reading Tree and Oxford Story Tree and have the following findings

(i) Oxford Reading Tree is published in England and the whole series is adopted in English schools.  There are 16 stages.

Oxford Story Tree is published in Hong Kong for local students which has CD and exercise books.  There are 7 levels with about 6-8 books for each level.

(ii) I have compared the book titles in Oxford Reading Tree and Oxford Story Tree and find most of the books in Oxford Story Tree is the same as Oxford Reading Tree.  But ORT have more books.

For example, Red Pack of Oxford Story Tree have four books which are the same as Stage 1: Kipper Series and the remaining two are the same as Stage 2.

But the four books in Oxford Story Tree have words while the corresponding books in ORT do not have words.

You may print out the list for the titles of ORT and OST and compare the difference.

You can borrow Stage 1 books from the libraries.  I think you first look for the titles from ORT website and search in library catalogue.

I once borrowed Stage 1 books but I eventually buy them because my son likes the books and I would let him read from time to time.

In my opinion, you may buy the Oxford Story Tree series as this series is much cheaper than ORT.

(If your kids loves the books then, you may consider to buy few more packs of ORT or borrowing the books from the public library.)

Moreover, the Oxford Reading Tree Talking Story CD-ROM from stage 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are available at some of the HK Public Library. You may reserve these CD-ROMs online (www.hkpl.gov.hk) and recall the CD to the nearest library that is convenient to you.

Hi,

The Central Library has a good collection of ORT.  On the children floor somewhere near the escalators, there are a few sets in the not for loan section.  My wife and I have spent quite a few hours there reading with our daughter.  I rate the ORT series very highly.  It's simply the best.  My 5 y 5 m old daughter loves the ORT and has finished each and every book up to stage 8 or 9.  She is a good reader and the ORT has something to do wiith that.  The stories are interesting, and never short of fun.  I strongly recommend the series.

For those of you who want to buy your own sets of ORT, I suggest that you start at stage 4 or 5.  Stage 1 to stage 3 books are simply too short to justifiy the costs (if money is not a concern, buy the whole set, and donate the books to the local schools or libraries when they are outgrown).  Do you have friends in Singapore?  I understand that the ORT books are much cheaper in Singapore (can anybody confirms that?).

Some people mention CDs.  If your English is sufficiently well (you don't have to be very proficient), I suggest that you should forget about the CDs.  Not only are they expensive, they are, in my view, doing no good.  I find the games, the colour, and the sound very distracting.  Kids are easily distracted, why take steps to distract them in the first place?  I'm sure the books are intersting enough and need not be supplemented by the CDs.  I have a friend, a well off one who do not really care about the cost of a whole set of ORT plus CDs, whose kids have spent quite a lot of time in front of the monitor watching the CDs.  His kids will turn 8 and 7 very shortly, and I don't believe that they can manage say a stage 7 or up book on their own (my daughter can).  I believe that it is far more important that parents should read to and together with their kids.  It's no good to leave the books, or more worse, the CDs to the kids.  I am not saying that the contents of the CDs are not good.  They are in fact very well designed.  BUT, with the CDs, parents are easily tempted to leave the CDs with the kids, and that is no good.  If you cannot make your kids love the books, don't bet on the CDs.  Stop and think of a way to make them love reading.

I also highly recommend the Berenstain Bear series.  Lovely books for kids.

My daughter loves ORT very much.  She's 4 years old.  She found stage 6 adventure stories very interesting and always asked me to repeat & repeat & repeat reading the same story to her so many times.  Hence, she can remember the story and is  able to telly the story in her own word (in English).

She also like Berenstain Bear series, esp the topic on "go to see doctor'.  Do you know where I can buy these series at a cheaper price cos' it costs $32.5 per book in Commercial Press or Play & Learn bookstore.
